Veteran Nollywood filmmaker and actress Uche Jombo has sparked fresh conversation in the Nigerian film industry after describing Nollywood as a “small industry” despite its global visibility and massive output.

The award-winning producer made the remarks during a recent interview at an event held in Lagos, where she spoke extensively about her experiences spanning more than two decades in the entertainment business. Her comments have since stirred reactions among filmmakers, actors and fans across social media.

According to Jombo, many people outside the industry often assume Nollywood is a massive, highly structured system comparable to Hollywood, but the reality is quite different.

She explained that while Nollywood produces a large number of films yearly and enjoys international recognition, the industry remains closely connected, with many professionals knowing one another personally or through shared networks.

She stressed that this “smallness” is not necessarily a weakness but an important truth young filmmakers must understand when entering the industry.

In her view, success in Nollywood requires not just talent, but also patience, relationships, and a deep understanding of how interconnected the space is.

Jombo, who began her acting journey in 1999 with the film Visa to Hell, has grown to become one of Nollywood’s most respected voices.

Over the years, she has expanded her career beyond acting into producing, screenwriting and directing, contributing to several successful projects including Holding Hope, Games Men Play, Damage, Lara and the Beat and Silent Scandals.

Her latest statement has drawn mixed reactions, with some industry watchers agreeing that Nollywood operates as a tight-knit creative community, while others argue that the industry has expanded significantly due to digital platforms and international collaborations.

Despite the debate, Jombo’s message appears to be aimed at guiding upcoming filmmakers on how to navigate the competitive space. She encouraged young creatives to focus on building strong professional relationships and to approach the industry with realistic expectations.

As Nollywood continues to grow in global influence, conversations like this highlight the evolving nature of Nigeria’s film sector and the realities behind its rapid expansion.
