Almost Rich (2026) is a Nollywood fantasy-drama that blends supernatural storytelling with social commentary about poverty, ambition, and the emotional cost of sudden wealth. The film follows a struggling shoemaker whose life changes dramatically after an unexpected encounter grants him access to wealth beyond his imagination. While the idea of sudden riches seems like a dream, the movie quickly reveals that every blessing comes with consequences, tests, and hidden emotional traps. Unlike typical “rags-to-riches” stories that focus only on success, Almost Rich is more interested in what wealth does to a person’s character, relationships, and moral choices once it arrives too quickly. 

STORY AND

 NARRATIVE The film follows Jidenna, a humble and hardworking shoemaker trying to survive in a difficult economic environment. His life is defined by struggle, small earnings, and constant pressure to provide a better future for himself and possibly his loved ones. 

Despite his effort, progress seems slow and discouraging. Everything changes after a mysterious supernatural encounter that gives him access to sudden wealth and opportunities he never imagined. At first, this transformation feels like a miracle. His environment changes, people begin to treat him differently, and life becomes easier in ways he never experienced before. However, the story quickly shifts from excitement to emotional tension. 

The wealth that was meant to solve his problems begins to create new ones. People around him start acting differently. Relationships become suspicious. Loyalty becomes uncertain. Even his own sense of identity begins to change. The film gradually reveals that the biggest danger of sudden wealth is not money itself, but the transformation of the human mind under pressure, temptation, and attention. 

THEMES

 One of the strongest themes in Almost Rich is the idea that wealth reveals character rather than simply improving life. Jidenna’s journey shows how money can amplify both good intentions and hidden weaknesses. Another major theme is temptation. Overall, the acting supports the story’s message about change, temptation, and moral pressure.

 DIRECTING AND CINEMATOGRAPHY

 The film uses a mix of realistic and slightly stylized visuals to represent the shift from poverty to wealth. Early scenes are simple and grounded, showing the struggles of everyday survival. As Jidenna’s life changes, the visuals become brighter, more polished, and more visually elevated. This contrast helps reinforce the emotional journey. The directing focuses on storytelling clarity rather than complex cinematography, which works well for the film’s message-driven narrative. However, some transitions between normal life and supernatural influence could have been smoother, as certain moments feel slightly abrupt. 

STRENGTHS 

One of the biggest strengths of Almost Rich is its strong moral message about wealth and human behavior. It does not glorify sudden riches but instead questions what people are willing to sacrifice to maintain them. The transformation of the main character is also well handled, making the emotional journey engaging and relatable. The film successfully balances fantasy elements with real-life social issues. Another strength is its cultural relevance, especially in showing how economic struggle and ambition shape human decisions in modern society.

 WEAKNESSES

 While the concept is interesting, some parts of the supernatural element feel underdeveloped. The explanation behind the wealth transformation is not deeply explored, which may leave some viewers with unanswered questions. The pacing also fluctuates, especially in the middle section where the story focuses more on repetition of lifestyle changes rather than narrative development. A few supporting roles could have been more deeply written to strengthen emotional impact. 

OVERALL IMPRESSION 

Almost Rich (2026) is a thought-provoking Nollywood drama that uses fantasy elements to explore real-world issues like poverty, ambition, morality, and identity. It is less about becoming rich and more about surviving what wealth does to the human mind.
