Afrobeats singer Adekunle Gold has opened up about the emotional and social challenges he has faced while living with sickle cell disease, including the stigma attached to the condition.
In a recent interview with media personality Angela Yee, the Orente crooner shared how people often react with pity or fear whenever he reveals his health status.
According to him, many assume he may not live long once they hear about his condition, a perception he described as both painful and discouraging.
Adekunle Gold explained that beyond the physical struggles, the emotional weight of being misunderstood has been one of his biggest battles.
He noted that sickle cell disease is often surrounded by ignorance, which leads to unfair judgment and stigma against those living with it.
The singer also reflected on one of the darkest moments of his life, revealing that he once experienced a severe crisis at the age of 20. He said the pain during that period was so intense that he wished for death.
According to him, the experience was so overwhelming that even his mother, who usually encouraged him during difficult moments, could not bring herself to rebuke him when he expressed such thoughts.
“At 20, I had the craziest crisis of my life. I told God to take my life. And my mom couldn’t even rebuke me,” he recalled, explaining how unbearable the pain had become at the time.
Despite the struggles, Adekunle Gold said he is deeply grateful to still be alive and able to pursue his music career. He credited his survival to resilience, medical care, and faith, while expressing hope that more awareness will be created around sickle cell disease.
The singer emphasized that people living with the condition should not be defined by it, but rather supported and understood. He also encouraged open conversations that can reduce stigma and help improve the quality of life for patients.
Adekunle Gold’s revelation has sparked emotional reactions from fans, many of whom praised his strength and courage in continuing to thrive despite the challenges associated with sickle cell disease.
