The Ghanaian entertainment community has been met with sadness following the passing of actress and entrepreneur Beverly Afaglo, who died after a prolonged illness that she had quietly battled for years. Reports confirm that she passed away on the night of Saturday, May 23, at the International Maritime Hospital in Tema, where she had been receiving medical care.
Her death became public on Sunday, May 24, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues in the film industry, fans, and members of the creative arts space who remembered her contributions both on screen and off screen. Many described the news as deeply unsettling, especially given her long-standing presence in Ghana’s movie scene.
According to her manager, Abu Iddris, the actress had been living with cancer for approximately two years. He noted that her journey through the illness was marked by endurance and determination despite the physical and emotional toll it carried.
“She battled cancer for two years. It was a long and painful fight, but she remained strong throughout,” he said.
He further explained that the condition was initially identified as breast cancer before it reportedly progressed over time, with hereditary factors believed to have influenced its spread. Although she kept much of her medical situation away from public attention, those close to her say she continued treatment while maintaining hope throughout the process.
Beverly Afaglo became a recognizable figure in Ghana’s film industry through her performances in television dramas and local movie productions that gained strong viewership in the 2000s and 2010s. Her ability to embody different roles helped her build a steady following, and she was often praised for her expressive acting style and screen presence.
Beyond acting, she also ventured into entrepreneurship, balancing creative work with business interests. This aspect of her career reflected a growing trend among Ghanaian entertainers who diversify into business as the industry evolves. Her colleagues often described her as focused and committed, with a personality that supported teamwork on set.
Her passing has also brought renewed attention to conversations around cancer awareness in Ghana. Over the years, health advocates have continued to encourage early screening and regular medical checks, especially for breast cancer, which remains one of the most common health concerns affecting women in the country. Public figures sharing their struggles have played a role in encouraging more openness about the disease, though many cases still go unspoken until later stages.
As tributes continue to circulate online, many have reflected on her contribution to Ghana’s entertainment growth and the memories she created through her work. Messages of condolence continue to pour in for her family, friends, and colleagues as the industry comes to terms with another major loss.
Her legacy remains tied to years of dedication to film, storytelling, and creative expression that connected with audiences across Ghana and beyond.
