Genevieve Nnaji is making a highly anticipated return to the screen with a new international project, marking a major comeback for one of Nigeria’s most celebrated film stars.

The acclaimed actress has joined the cast of Wahala, a BBC drama series adapted from the bestselling novel by Nigerian-born author Nikki May.

The six-part thriller is produced by Firebird Pictures, a BBC Studios company, and will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

The story is set in London and explores the complex lives of four Nigerian-British women whose long-standing friendship begins to unravel under the weight of secrets, hidden truths, and unresolved past experiences.

The series brings together a strong ensemble cast, including Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma alongside Genevieve Nnaji.

The combination of talent has already generated excitement within both African and international entertainment circles.

The adaptation is written by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Theresa Ikoko, known for works such as Rocks. She describes Wahala as a gripping exploration of identity, loyalty, and emotional conflict among women navigating life in a multicultural society.

According to her, the production brings together a talented cast and crew committed to delivering a powerful storytelling experience.

The plot centres on how deep-seated secrets and emotional baggage threaten to destroy friendships that once seemed unbreakable. As tensions rise, each character is forced to confront personal struggles that test their trust in one another.

Genevieve Nnaji expressed excitement about joining the project, noting that she is thrilled to be part of such an intriguing story and to work with a talented international team.

Her return has been widely welcomed, especially by fans who have been waiting for her comeback to on-screen acting after a long break.

The production is directed by Leonora Lonsdale and Remi Weekes, with Ado Yoshizaki Cassuto serving as producer.

The collaboration brings together a diverse creative team focused on delivering a fresh, modern narrative that blends British and Nigerian cultural perspectives.

Beyond its entertainment value, Wahala also highlights the growing presence of African stories in global streaming and broadcast platforms. It reflects a continued interest in narratives that explore identity, diaspora experiences, and the complexity of modern relationships.

The series is expected to premiere soon, with anticipation already building around Genevieve Nnaji’s return and the emotional depth of the storyline.
