Afrobeats superstar Davido has responded to criticism over his recent comments on Nigeria’s worsening social and economic challenges, clarifying that his friendship with Seyi Tinubu does not prevent him from speaking out against issues affecting the country.
The singer found himself at the center of an online debate after lamenting what he described as growing injustice in Nigeria and calling on entertainers to use their platforms more responsibly.
Speaking candidly, Davido admitted that many public figures, including himself, have not done enough to address national concerns.
“I can’t lie, we entertainers, we dey fuck up, I wouldn’t lie, including me. We need to speak up, it’s too much injustice going on. Our country don go,” he said.
His remarks quickly gained attention on social media, with many Nigerians applauding him for addressing the state of the nation. However, others questioned the sincerity of his comments, citing his perceived closeness to individuals within the political establishment.
One social media user accused the award-winning singer of being selective in his criticism and referenced his relationship with Seyi Tinubu, suggesting that his public statements were merely performative.
The user wrote:
“Na God go punish you and your family. Go and do that performative rubbish in your City Boys group chat and get tf out of my face with all this pretentious nonsense. Na foolish Nigerians I blame.”
The comment sparked a direct response from Davido, who strongly rejected claims that he belongs to any political clique or “City Boys” group.
According to the singer, while he has maintained a friendship with Seyi Tinubu for several years, the relationship has never stopped him from expressing concerns about governance and the challenges facing ordinary Nigerians.
“I no Dey part of any city boy group,” he wrote.
Davido also reminded critics that he has previously faced backlash for openly discussing Nigeria’s problems on international platforms.
“When I called out the government on American media, you guys rained curses on me,” he stated.
The singer further explained that his friendship with Seyi Tinubu is personal and should not be interpreted as political loyalty or endorsement.
“I’ve been friends with ST for years, and that’s where it stops,” he said.
He added that he frequently communicates his concerns directly to Seyi and does not hesitate to raise issues affecting the country whenever the opportunity arises.
“And I call and complain to him all the time, even in person,” Davido added.
The musician’s response has generated fresh conversations online about the relationship between celebrities and political figures, with many Nigerians debating whether friendships with influential individuals should affect public criticism of government policies.
Over the years, Davido has occasionally used his platform to comment on national matters, particularly issues affecting young people. While he is best known globally for his music, the singer has also been involved in political conversations, especially during election periods and major national events.
His latest comments come at a time when concerns over insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and governance continue to dominate public discourse across Nigeria.
Despite the criticism directed at him, Davido maintained that personal relationships should not be confused with his views on national issues. The singer insisted that he remains willing to speak up when necessary and will continue to voice concerns about the welfare of Nigerians regardless of who may be affected by his opinions.
His comments have since drawn mixed reactions, with supporters praising his willingness to address difficult issues while critics continue to question the role celebrities should play in holding leaders accountable.
