The 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos once again brought together a wide mix of African entertainment figures, including actors, filmmakers, producers, digital creators, and industry stakeholders.
The annual ceremony, organized by Africa Magic, is regarded as one of the most prominent entertainment award events on the continent, celebrating excellence in film, television, and creative production.
The night was filled with the usual display of elegance and fashion, as guests arrived in carefully selected designer outfits, with red carpet moments drawing significant attention. Beyond the awards themselves, the event also functioned as a major gathering point for networking and visibility within the entertainment industry, making it one of the most talked-about nights in African showbiz each year.
Following the conclusion of the ceremony, Nigerian UK-based crossdresser Bobrisky expressed his opinion about a growing trend surrounding attendance at high-profile entertainment events like the AMVCA. His comments focused on individuals who, according to him, attend such ceremonies without official invitations or any direct involvement in the film industry.
In his words:
“Now dis one is for those of you that has nothing to do with acting movie, no invitation from AMVCA, you are not part of the nominee yet you book makeup artist, stylist, photographer, hire a car just to attend an event you aren’t invited too you one of the Nigeria problem and the most CLASSLESS human on earth. Honor an invitation not just to branch where you ain’t invited.”
His statement pointed to the increasing culture of non-industry attendees investing heavily in appearance, styling, and media coverage simply to be present at the event venue or appear on the red carpet. According to him, the essence of invitations should be respected, especially for an event that is primarily designed to honor achievements in the creative and film sector.
The remarks also drew attention to how entertainment award ceremonies in Nigeria have evolved over the years, with red carpet appearances becoming a significant aspect of public visibility. For many, such events are no longer just about awards but also about influence, branding, and social positioning.
Still, Bobrisky’s comments reignited conversation around boundaries, access, and the meaning of participation at elite entertainment gatherings like the AMVCA.
