Award-winning filmmaker and producer Kunle Afolayan has been honoured with an Award of Excellence at the Lagos Architects Forum 17.0 organised by the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Lagos State Chapter.
The event, which brought together professionals from the architecture, entertainment and creative industries, celebrated the relationship between design, storytelling and urban development.
The filmmaker received the recognition after delivering a keynote speech during the forum held in Lagos.
Sharing moments from the event on his social media page, Afolayan expressed gratitude to the organisers and attendees for the honour bestowed on him. He also reflected on the importance of architecture in filmmaking, explaining how physical spaces and structures contribute to storytelling and audience experience.
According to the filmmaker, architecture plays a major role in shaping emotions in films, noting that production design goes beyond aesthetics and becomes part of the narrative itself.
He explained that every environment used in filmmaking influences how stories are perceived by viewers, adding that filmmakers and architects share similar creative responsibilities in building experiences for people.
Afolayan described the gathering as an inspiring experience filled with valuable conversations, exhibitions and interactions with professionals from different sectors.
He also appreciated architect Theo Lawson for years of mentorship, inspiration and shared knowledge that have influenced his understanding of creative spaces.
The Lagos Architects Forum is an annual event hosted by the Nigerian Institute of Architects to discuss innovation, urban growth and the future of architecture in Nigeria.
This year’s edition, tagged LAF 17.0, focused heavily on the connection between architecture and entertainment, particularly how modern design can support film villages, cinemas, theatres and creative hubs across the country.
The four-day programme, scheduled to hold between May 6 and May 9, 2026, is taking place at the Exhibition Hall of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, formerly known as the National Arts Theatre in Lagos.
Organisers stated that the event aims to encourage stronger collaboration between architects, filmmakers, policymakers and investors interested in developing Nigeria’s creative economy.
Afolayan’s recognition at the forum further highlights his growing influence beyond filmmaking. Over the years, the director has become known not only for producing culturally relevant movies but also for investing in creative infrastructure through his KAP Film Village and Resort.
His projects have consistently promoted African storytelling while showcasing the importance of carefully designed spaces in film production.
The honour also reflects the increasing collaboration between Nigeria’s entertainment industry and other creative sectors.
As Nollywood continues to expand globally, experts believe partnerships with architects and urban planners could help improve production facilities, tourism and cultural preservation in the country.
