Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has said that winning an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) is not a requirement for validating his talent or success in the Nigerian film industry.

The actor made the statement during a recent appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, where he spoke extensively about awards, public recognition, and how he measures his own career achievements.

According to him, awards are subjective and should not be used as the ultimate standard for judging an actor’s ability or contribution to the industry.

He argued that the decision of a small panel of judges does not necessarily reflect the true impact or quality of an actor’s body of work.

Edochie insisted that his performances over the years already speak for themselves, noting that he has delivered roles that remain unmatched in his opinion.

“You cannot contest it. Performances that I have dropped four, five, six years ago no actor has been able to replicate it till date,” he said.

While acknowledging his place in the industry, he stopped short of calling himself the greatest actor of all time, stating that he does so out of respect for his father and personal humility.

He, however, maintained that he belongs among the top performers in Nollywood based on his body of work and consistency.

“I am one of the greatest. So I will not wait until AMVCA calls me. Call anybody you want to call. I do not have any problem with them,” he added.

The actor also addressed public perception, saying he has never been the type to complain about awards, nominations, or lack of recognition on social media.

He suggested that many industry debates around awards are unnecessary, especially when artists continue to receive roles and audience support regardless of accolades.

“Have you seen me rant on social media before? A group of people gathered to say this is who they are giving to. I am not bothered,” he said.

Edochie further emphasized that his focus remains on delivering quality performances in every project he takes on, regardless of the platform or production scale.

According to him, professionalism and consistency matter more than trophies or public validation.

“Anywhere I found myself I will keep doing well. Any movie you keep me, I will do my best and drop a fantastic performance. Put it on any hood you like; that is your business,” he stated.

He added that he is not influenced by critics or negative opinions about him, saying his motivation comes from within and from his global fanbase.

“Your like or attitude towards me does not concern me. I am always concerned about taking positive moves. I have fans from all over the world,” he said.

Edochie also reflected on his understanding of self-worth, noting that external validation should not determine how individuals see themselves or their abilities.

“My worth is not determined by you. My worth is determined by God. It is determined by the amount of work that I put in and the viewers,” he added.

The actor’s comments have since generated reactions online, with fans divided over his remarks. While some agreed with his perspective on awards not defining talent, others argued that industry recognition still plays an important role in measuring achievement and encouraging excellence.

Despite the debate, Edochie maintained that he remains focused on his craft and will continue to give his best in every role without being distracted by award considerations or public criticism.

His latest comments add to his history of outspoken views on fame, success, and the Nigerian entertainment industry, where he remains one of the most talked-about actors in recent years.
