The ancient town of Ijebu-Ode is once again preparing for one of Nigeria’s biggest cultural celebrations as the 2026 edition of the Ojude Oba Festival draws near. Scheduled to hold on Friday, May 29, the colourful event is expected to attract thousands of visitors from different parts of the country and beyond, continuing its reputation as a major showcase of Yoruba heritage, fashion, and tradition.
Ojude Oba, which means “the king’s forecourt,” is an annual festival celebrated a few days after Eid-el-Kabir. The event began many decades ago as a gathering where Muslim faithful paid respect to the Awujale of Ijebuland.
Over time, it has transformed into a grand cultural spectacle that now attracts celebrities, tourists, dignitaries, and culture enthusiasts eager to witness the beauty of Ijebu traditions.
One of the festival’s major highlights is the appearance of the various regberegbe groups. These age-grade associations usually arrive in coordinated outfits made from rich traditional fabrics such as aso-oke, lace, and ankara.
Their colourful entrances, dancing, singing, and dramatic displays often become some of the most talked-about moments from the celebration. Every year, groups compete to outshine one another with creative fashion styles and elegant presentations.
Another attraction that keeps people excited is the famous horse-riding procession by members of the Balogun families.
Decorated horses, richly dressed riders, and traditional drummers combine to create a royal atmosphere that reflects the deep history of the Ijebu people.
The horse riders usually parade proudly through the venue while spectators cheer and take photographs.
The festival has also become a major fashion event in recent years. Stylish attendees often use the occasion to showcase luxurious traditional outfits and accessories.
One personality already generating attention ahead of this year’s edition is Farooq Oreagba, widely admired online for his fashionable appearances at previous festivals.
Photos recently shared online showed him dressed in a striking navy blue and crimson aso-oke agbada while posing beside a horse, increasing anticipation for the event.
Beyond the glamour and entertainment, Ojude Oba remains an important symbol of unity and cultural pride. Families reunite during the celebration, businesses record increased patronage, and younger generations get the opportunity to connect with their roots.
The festival also boosts tourism in Ogun State as hotels, restaurants, and transport operators experience increased activity during the period.
For first-time visitors, organisers and regular attendees advise arriving early because roads leading into Ijebu-Ode usually become heavily congested.
Guests are also encouraged to wear traditional attire to fully embrace the spirit of the occasion. Comfortable shoes, cash for purchases, and readiness for large crowds are considered essential for anyone attending.
