Nollywood actress and entrepreneur Esther Okereke has secured the presidential ticket of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) ahead of the 2027 general election.
Okereke emerged victorious at the party’s presidential primary and national convention held in Abuja, defeating fellow aspirants Joseph Faduri, a former Labour Party presidential hopeful, and UK-based businessman Ademola Onigbokun.
Her victory was formally announced by the party’s national chairman, Chinedu Obi, who described the exercise as transparent and in line with the party’s constitution.
Obi noted that the actress had successfully met all requirements outlined by the party before participating in the contest.
Addressing party delegates during the event, Obi expressed concern over the state of the nation, citing rising insecurity, poverty and economic difficulties affecting many Nigerians.
He argued that the country’s challenges were largely a consequence of poor leadership and weak institutions rather than a shortage of resources.
According to him, Nigeria remains blessed with abundant natural wealth, fertile agricultural land and a vibrant population capable of driving development if given the right leadership.
He stressed that the NRM was established to promote accountability, justice, constitutional democracy and good governance.
The party chairman also highlighted the NRM’s development blueprint, which he said focuses on key sectors such as security, education, healthcare, economic growth, entrepreneurship, infrastructure and institutional reforms.
In her acceptance speech, Okereke thanked party members for entrusting her with the ticket and pledged to provide purposeful leadership if elected president.
She described her nomination as a responsibility rather than a personal achievement, insisting that her ambition was driven by a desire to contribute to national development.
The actress painted a picture of a country facing numerous social and economic problems, including unemployment, insecurity and hardship. She lamented that many citizens continue to struggle despite Nigeria’s vast human and natural resources.
Okereke, however, maintained that the nation could overcome its challenges through visionary leadership and collective effort.
She unveiled her proposed policy framework, tagged the “ESTHER Agenda,” which she said would focus on improving education, strengthening security, advancing technology, expanding housing opportunities and supporting entrepreneurship.
She added that the initiative would also encourage patriotism, national unity and inclusive governance aimed at ensuring that every segment of society benefits from government policies.
Beyond her political ambitions, Okereke is a familiar face in the Nigerian movie industry, having featured in several productions over the years. She is also involved in sports administration as the chief executive officer of Gliding Stars Football Club.
Her emergence as the NRM presidential candidate adds another notable figure to Nigeria’s growing list of contenders expected to participate in the race for the country’s highest office in 2027.
