The Nigerian film industry, popularly known as Nollywood, is often described as one big creative family. Interestingly, for many of its biggest stars, that “family” description is not just symbolic but literal.
Across generations, relationships by blood and marriage have shaped careers, influenced storytelling styles, and even strengthened the industry’s identity. From legendary fathers and sons to powerful acting couples, here are five notable Nollywood-related stars and families who have left a lasting impact.
One of the most recognized names is the Edochie family. Veteran actor Pete Edochie is regarded as one of the most respected figures in African cinema, known for his commanding presence and traditional wisdom-driven roles.
His son, Yul Edochie, followed in his footsteps and built his own identity as a modern Nollywood leading man. Another influential dynasty is the Afolayan family. The late Adeyemi Afolayan, popularly known as Ade Love, laid the foundation for what is now a respected film legacy. His children, including Kunle Afolayan, Gabriel Afolayan, and Aremu Afolayan, have all carved successful careers in the industry.
Kunle is especially known for his award-winning productions and cinematic storytelling, Gabriel for his emotional depth and musical talent, and Aremu for his strong presence in Yoruba-language films.
In a different category of influence is the legendary couple Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva. Though not related by blood, their marriage represents one of Nollywood’s strongest creative partnerships. Another notable figure is Sola Sobowale, a veteran actress known for her powerful screen presence, especially in films like King of Boys. While she keeps much of her family life private, her children, including her twin daughters, have occasionally been linked to creative and production-related activities within her career ecosystem.
Finally, Nollywood superstar Funke Akindele has also built a strong family-supported entertainment empire.
Her brother, Poka Akindele, plays an important role behind the scenes in production and management through SceneOne Productions.
This family collaboration has helped her sustain one of Nigeria’s most successful entertainment brands, including the widely popular Jenifa franchise.
