Nigerian singer Omah Lay has sparked conversations across the music industry after making bold statements about his position among Afrobeats stars, declaring himself the best artiste Nigeria has produced in the last two decades.
The 28-year-old made the remarks during an appearance on the NandoLeaks podcast, where he spoke confidently about his craft, talent, and what sets him apart from others in the industry. According to him, his level of creativity and musical expression places him above his peers.
“I’m the best at this. I don’t mean to brag… but I am the best in the last 20 years,” he said.
Omah Lay went further to emphasise that when it comes to true artistry and the ability to create music, he believes he stands in a class of his own. However, he acknowledged one artiste he considers close to his level—Burna Boy.
“If you bring together all Afrobeats artistes, when it comes to true artistry and making music, I stand alone at the top. The only person I sometimes put on the same level as me is Burna Boy. He’s the sole artiste I look at and think, ‘yes, he’s up there.’ Apart from Burna, it’s just me,” he stated.
The singer also expressed frustration with being grouped alongside other artistes, insisting that his individuality and style deserve distinct recognition.
“It bothers me when people lump me into certain categories. Don’t do that. I am the greatest,” he added.
His comments have since stirred mixed reactions among fans and music lovers, with some praising his confidence while others question the boldness of his claim given the number of successful artistes Nigeria has produced over the years.
Beyond his statements about music, Omah Lay also opened up about personal struggles, offering a glimpse into challenges he faced in his private life. He admitted that he went through a difficult period, particularly in his relationships.
“My sex life was out of control last year. I realised I’m an obsessive person—whatever I get into, I give everything I have. I could completely lose myself every time I fell in love,” he revealed.
He also recounted a painful experience involving a past relationship, sharing that a woman he had hoped to build a future with ended things during the previous year’s Grammy Awards, a moment that left a lasting impact on him.
Omah Lay’s journey in music began at a young age. He started out as a producer at just 15 before transitioning into a full-fledged artiste. His breakthrough came in 2020 with hit songs like You and Bad Influence, which quickly gained popularity and established him as one of the leading voices in the new wave of Afrobeats.
Known for his unique Afro-fusion sound and emotionally driven lyrics, he has continued to grow his fanbase both locally and internationally. His ability to blend vulnerability with melody has earned him recognition as one of the most distinctive artistes of his generation.
In recent years, his work has also received international attention. He was nominated at the 2026 Grammy Awards in the Best African Music Performance category for his collaboration with Davido on the song With You. However, the award went to Tyla.
Despite not taking home the award, the nomination further cemented his growing global presence and influence.
With his latest remarks, Omah Lay has once again placed himself at the centre of public discussion, reinforcing his confidence and ambition as an artiste determined to define his own legacy in the music industry.
