Nollywood actress Victoria Inyama has issued a public apology after facing widespread criticism over her earlier remarks on female circumcision.
The controversy began after the actress spoke during an Instagram live session with media personality Daddy Freeze, where she shared her personal experience and suggested that the practice had a positive effect on her. Her comments quickly sparked outrage online, with many condemning her stance and raising concerns about the dangers of female genital mutilation (FGM).
In response to the backlash, Inyama released a follow-up video on Daddy Freeze’s platform, acknowledging that her initial comments were made without a full understanding of the issue.
She explained that subsequent conversations with medical professionals and people close to her helped her realise the severity and harmful impact of FGM, which goes far beyond her personal experience.
“A few weeks ago, on a talk show with Daddy Freeze, we were talking about issues like we always do, and I was just mentioning the root cause of certain issues and what I think or why I think it was done at that time. That’s where the FGM thing came up. Our ancestors thought that female circumcision would control the urges of women; unfortunately, I didn’t know the gravity of what it is in most places. FGM is bad. A midwife called me to explain this, and now I understand. It is nothing like what I went through; I never knew they stitched and thought it was just the basics,” she said.
The actress went further to share personal accounts that deepened her understanding of the issue, including a story from a close spiritual mentor who suffered serious complications from the practice at a young age.
“Even my prophetess in church, who is like my mother, told me she was in the hospital for a week over her episode, and she was only 15. For that to have happened to her and to everybody out there, I am sorry if my argument and comment came across as uninformed. Yes, I was totally uninformed about this FGM thing; now I am informed. So, now I am going to do better,” she added.
Inyama admitted that her earlier remarks did not fully reflect the realities many women face and expressed regret over how her statements may have been interpreted by the public.
Her apology comes amid ongoing efforts by health advocates and organisations to raise awareness about the dangers of female genital mutilation, which has been widely condemned due to its physical and psychological effects.
By acknowledging her lack of prior understanding, the actress signaled a shift in her perspective, stating that she is now better informed and committed to speaking more responsibly on sensitive issues going forward.
