Kanye West, now legally known as Ye, has been barred from entering the United Kingdom, leading to the cancellation of this year’s Wireless Festival in London, where he was scheduled to headline.
The UK government refused his Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) following widespread backlash over his recent antisemitic, racist, and pro-Nazi comments, which have sparked global outrage over the past several years.
Wireless Festival organisers confirmed the decision in a statement, revealing that Ye’s entry had been denied by the Home Office, effectively preventing him from performing.
“The Home Office has withdrawn Ye’s ETA, denying him entry into the United Kingdom. As a result, Wireless Festival is cancelled and refunds will be issued to all ticket holders,” the organisers said.
They added that multiple stakeholders had been consulted before booking Ye, and no immediate concerns had been raised at the time.
The statement acknowledged the seriousness of antisemitism, noting the real and personal impact Ye’s statements have had.
It also referenced Ye’s recent comments in which he reportedly expressed a desire to engage in dialogue with the Jewish community in the UK, while recognising that words alone are insufficient to address the harm caused.
The Home Office clarified that the decision to refuse Ye entry was made because his presence in the country would not be conducive to the public good.
This move comes after Ye applied for his ETA earlier in the week, prompting authorities to review his travel request in light of his controversial statements.
The cancellation of Wireless Festival has caused significant disruption, with organisers noting the loss of a headliner and the withdrawal of multiple sponsors.
Campaign Against Antisemitism criticised the initial booking, questioning the festival’s stakeholder consultation process.
A spokesperson said, “Apparently ‘no concerns were highlighted’ about Kanye West at the time of the booking. Who were they consulting? A wall? That’s what happens when the only stakeholders you speak to are those who stand to make a profit.”
Fans who had purchased tickets for the festival are now set to receive full refunds, as organisers work to manage the fallout from the cancellation.
The controversy highlights the wider challenges faced by public figures whose behaviour offstage has a direct impact on commercial and cultural events.
Ye’s barring from the UK marks a significant moment in his ongoing career, reflecting the increasing consequences of inflammatory public statements.
