Tunde Onakoya Makes History as First African to Win Lideramos Award

Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya has made history after emerging as the first African recipient of the prestigious Lideramos Youth Award for Social Impact, an international recognition presented in Barcelona, Spain.

The award celebrates young changemakers across the world who are using innovation and community-driven ideas to create lasting impact. 

For Onakoya, the recognition is another milestone in a journey that has steadily attracted global attention for its originality and purpose.

Sharing the moment on social media, the Lagos-born chess advocate expressed gratitude for the honour, describing it as both humbling and inspiring. 

He noted that the recognition goes beyond personal achievement, reflecting the work being done through his initiative to uplift children from underserved communities.

Onakoya’s story is rooted in resilience. Growing up in a modest environment in Lagos, he discovered chess at a young age and gradually developed a deep passion for the game. However, what sets him apart is how he transformed that passion into a social movement. 

Through his organisation, Chess in Slums Africa, he has introduced thousands of children to chess, using it as a tool to teach discipline, critical thinking, and confidence.

Over the years, the initiative has grown into a platform that not only nurtures talent but also opens doors to educational opportunities. Several beneficiaries have gone on to secure scholarships and international exposure, changing the trajectory of their lives.

His global profile rose significantly in 2025 when he staged a record-breaking chess marathon at Times Square in New York City. 

The endurance challenge, which lasted 60 hours, was designed to raise funds and awareness for children’s education across Africa.

Receiving the Lideramos award further reinforces Onakoya’s influence as a social entrepreneur using unconventional methods to tackle systemic issues. His work continues to demonstrate how simple ideas, when driven by purpose, can produce extraordinary results.

As recognition for his efforts grows globally, Onakoya remains focused on expanding his mission, proving that chess is not just a game but a powerful vehicle for change in communities that need it the most.
