Tunde Onakoya has once again placed Nigeria on the global map after achieving a historic milestone at the iconic Louvre Abu Dhabi.
The chess master and founder of Chess in Slums Africa recently became the first Nigerian to play a game of chess at the renowned cultural landmark, marking yet another significant moment in his inspiring journey.
Sharing the news with his followers on social media, Onakoya expressed excitement over the achievement, describing it as a proud moment not just for himself but for Nigeria as a whole.
Known for consistently breaking barriers and redefining possibilities, the chess advocate continues to use his platform to highlight the power of resilience and purpose.
This latest feat comes shortly after he received international recognition in Barcelona, where he was honoured with the Lideramos Youth Award for Social Impact.
With this, he also made history as the first African to receive the prestigious award, further cementing his growing influence beyond the chess community.
Onakoya’s journey is deeply rooted in his upbringing in Lagos, where he discovered his passion for chess at a young age. Rather than keeping his talent to himself, he turned it into a tool for change by founding Chess in Slums Africa, an initiative focused on empowering children from disadvantaged communities.
Through this programme, many young people have gained access to education, mentorship, and life-changing opportunities.
His impact gained global attention in 2025 when he staged a remarkable chess marathon at Times Square in New York City. During the event, he played chess continuously for 60 hours, aiming to raise awareness and funds for educational projects across Africa.
The initiative drew widespread support and highlighted his commitment to using chess as a force for good.
Beyond records and awards, Onakoya’s story continues to resonate because of its purpose-driven nature. His achievements reflect not only personal success but also a broader mission to inspire hope and create opportunities for others.
