Authorities in the United States have identified the man accused of opening fire near the venue of the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C., triggering panic at one of the country’s most high-profile gatherings.
According to reports by CNN, the suspect has been named as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher and video game developer based in Southern California. Law enforcement officials confirmed that he was apprehended close to the Washington Hilton, where President Donald Trump and other top government officials were attending the annual event.
Allen, who resides in Torrance, a city within the Los Angeles metropolitan area, is said to have a background in both education and technology. Records indicate that he worked part-time at C2 Education, a tutoring and academic support company, where he was once recognised as “teacher of the month” in December 2024.
Further details about his academic journey show that he obtained a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 2017. He later advanced his studies by earning a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
During his university years, Allen reportedly gained attention in a local news feature for developing a prototype emergency braking system designed for wheelchairs, highlighting his interest in engineering innovation and accessibility.
Beyond academics, he also identified himself as a video game developer. Reports suggest he created and released an independent game titled Bohrdom on the Steam platform. He is also believed to have registered a trademark for the project in 2018 and was working on another game, tentatively named First Law.
Political donation records from the Federal Election Commission show that Allen made a modest $25 contribution to the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris in October 2024, although authorities have not linked this to the incident.
Security agencies revealed that the suspect was armed with multiple weapons at the time of the attack. He was taken into custody after breaching a security checkpoint near the event venue, raising serious concerns about safety protocols at major national gatherings.
The shooting caused immediate panic, prompting swift action from security personnel. President Donald Trump, the First Lady, and other guests were evacuated from the venue as a precautionary measure.
During the incident, a Secret Service agent sustained injuries after being struck by a bullet. However, officials confirmed that the protective vest worn by the agent prevented more severe harm, and the officer is expected to recover.
Authorities have since launched a full-scale investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. Law enforcement agencies are examining the suspect’s background, activities, and any potential connections that may shed light on why the incident occurred.
Officials have urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue, assuring that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, known for bringing together political leaders, journalists, and public figures, remains one of the most closely guarded events in the United States, making the breach a significant security concern.
