Frank Onyeka played his part as Coventry City secured a dramatic return to the Premier League after a 1-1 draw away to Blackburn Rovers, completing a long and emotional journey back to the top flight after 25 years.

Coventry only needed a single point from the match to confirm promotion, but the night did not go smoothly. Blackburn struck first through Ryoya Morishita, putting the home side in control and briefly delaying Coventry’s celebrations. The goal raised tension inside the stadium as Coventry struggled to find their rhythm.

Frank Onyeka started the match and contributed in midfield before being substituted in the 62nd minute.

His presence helped Coventry stay competitive in a physically demanding contest, even as Blackburn continued to push for a result that could have complicated the visitors’ promotion hopes.

As the match entered its final stages, Coventry refused to give up. Their persistence paid off when Bobby Thomas delivered a crucial moment, rising highest from a set-piece situation to head home an equaliser with just six minutes remaining.

The goal sparked relief among the Coventry players and travelling supporters, confirming the point needed to secure promotion.

The result marks Coventry’s return to the English top division for the first time since 2001, when they were relegated after nearly a decade in the Premier League since its formation in 1992.

Their journey since then has been turbulent, including a drop to League Two in 2017, one of the lowest points in the club’s modern history.

However, the Sky Blues have rebuilt steadily over recent years and came close in 2023, losing in the Championship play-off final against Luton Town.

This season, under the leadership of Frank Lampard, they have shown consistency and resilience, powering through the Championship and securing promotion with three matches still left to play.

While Coventry celebrate a historic achievement, attention now turns to the Championship title race. Second-placed Ipswich Town remain 11 points behind, meaning Coventry are in a strong position to finish top of the table.

For Blackburn, the result carries mixed emotions. The draw extends their unbeaten home run and keeps them five points clear of the relegation zone, offering some breathing space in a tense survival battle.

For Onyeka, the night adds another important milestone to his career as he prepares to return to Premier League football with a Coventry side that has completed one of the most impressive comeback stories in English football in recent years.
