Marie-Louise Eta has written her name into the history books after being appointed interim head coach of Union Berlin, becoming the first woman to manage a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
The 34-year-old takes over at a crucial time for the Bundesliga side, following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart after a disappointing run of results.
Union Berlin’s recent form has been far from convincing, with the team struggling to maintain consistency and slipping into an uncomfortable position in the league table.
Although they are not currently in the relegation zone, their performances in 2026 have raised concerns about their ability to finish the season strongly.
Eta’s appointment is not entirely unexpected within the club, given her growing influence behind the scenes. She had already made history in 2023 when she became the first female assistant coach in the Bundesliga, also at Union Berlin.
Her reputation continued to grow when she briefly stepped into a leadership role on the touchline during a suspension for then-manager Nenad Bjelica, guiding the team during that period and earning praise for her composure and tactical awareness.
Having also worked with Union Berlin’s youth teams, Eta is well familiar with the club’s structure, philosophy, and player development system.
This background could prove crucial as she attempts to steady the team during a tense run-in. With only a few matches left to play, every point will be vital in ensuring the club avoids slipping further down the table.
Club officials described the managerial change as a necessary step to reset the team’s direction. The decision reflects growing frustration with recent performances and a belief that a fresh voice could inspire a turnaround. Eta, for her part, has acknowledged the magnitude of the task ahead but expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to respond positively.
