The Lagos State Government has dismissed reports suggesting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been directed to resign over alleged health issues, describing the claim as entirely false and misleading.
The clarification was made in a statement issued on Monday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, who said the report lacked credibility and should be ignored by the public.
According to the statement, the publication by an online platform alleging that the governor had been asked to step down on health grounds has no factual basis.
“We have noted with concern a false report… alleging that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been ‘ordered to resign on health grounds’ with the Deputy Governor set to take over,” the statement read.
Akosile firmly refuted the claim, stressing that there has been no such directive from any authority.
“This report is false in its entirety. Nobody has asked the Lagos Governor to resign. This is another fake news, which has become a pattern,” he said.
The government further reassured residents that the governor remains in good condition and is fully capable of carrying out his responsibilities.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in good health, of sound mind, and is actively discharging his duties as Governor of Lagos State,” the statement added.
Addressing speculation surrounding a recent meeting between the governor and his deputy, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the government explained that the interaction was routine and should not be misinterpreted.
“Earlier today, the Governor received Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who paid him a courtesy visit to formally notify him of his intention to contest for Governor. The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere, as is customary,” the statement noted.
Officials emphasised that there is no cause for concern regarding the leadership of the state, adding that governance activities are continuing without disruption.
The Lagos State Government also urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports and rely on official sources for accurate information.
Reaffirming its position, the government maintained that Governor Sanwo-Olu remains fully committed to his duties and continues to oversee the affairs of the state effectively.
