Kenya has officially confirmed its role as a co-host for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after fulfilling the financial requirements set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The East African nation paid the stipulated $30 million hosting fee, a move CAF says guarantees Kenya’s commitment to staging a successful continental tournament.

In a statement on the landmark achievement, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Salim Mvurya, emphasized that the payment underscores the country’s readiness and seriousness in preparing for one of Africa’s premier sporting events.

“This milestone demonstrates Kenya’s ability to deliver a world-class tournament, ensuring that all logistical and operational aspects meet international standards,” he said.

The government has also announced the formation of a revamped Multi-Agency Local Organizing Committee (LOC) tasked with coordinating the event.

The committee will bring together representatives from both public and private sectors to oversee critical areas, including stadium readiness, security, accommodation, transportation, and fan engagement.

Mvurya highlighted that the initiative reflects Kenya’s broader vision of using sports as a platform to enhance national infrastructure and promote tourism.

“We are engaging key stakeholders from various sectors to ensure seamless delivery across every aspect of the tournament, from venues to fan experiences,” he added.

The 2027 AFCON will mark a significant milestone for Kenya, which has previously expressed interest in hosting major continental competitions but faced challenges in meeting CAF’s financial and infrastructure criteria.

With the payment finalized, the country now joins a growing list of African nations preparing to welcome teams and fans from across the continent, boosting both sports and economic activities.

Fans and football analysts alike have praised Kenya’s swift action, noting that early financial compliance allows more time for detailed planning, which is crucial for a tournament of this scale.

CAF also welcomed the development, affirming confidence in Kenya’s ability to meet all organizational and logistical standards.

Kenya’s successful bid adds to the growing momentum for AFCON’s expansion, reflecting the Confederation’s commitment to rotating the tournament across different regions of Africa while maintaining high organizational standards.

Football enthusiasts across Africa now eagerly anticipate Kenya’s preparations, looking forward to a tournament that promises competitive matches, cultural showcases, and enhanced fan experiences.

With CAF’s approval and the $30 million payment secured, Kenya can now fully focus on the operational side of hosting, ensuring that stadiums, training facilities, and other infrastructure meet global standards ahead of the 2027 AFCON kickoff.
