Nigerian music star Kcee has opened up about the challenges he faced in gaining recognition within the music industry, revealing that years of being overlooked for awards left a deep emotional impact on him.
In a recent interview on Afrobeats Intelligence, the singer reflected on his journey, describing an industry he believes did not always reward his efforts despite his consistency and contributions.
“To be honest, I grew up in an industry that was not fair to… and giving my best and the industry was not recognising,” he said.
According to Kcee, while award bodies and industry gatekeepers failed to acknowledge his work, his fan base remained a constant source of encouragement and support throughout his career.
“The fans were the ones behind me. I did a lot of work, and they were not nominating me for awards. And I cried. I was pained. Right now, whether I win awards or not, I do not care. I prefer the rewards to the awards. It affected everything and not just music,” he added.
The singer’s remarks highlight the emotional strain that can come with feeling undervalued, even after years of dedication and success in a competitive industry.
Reflecting on key moments in his career, Kcee identified his hit song Limpopo as a major turning point that changed his trajectory. He described the release of the track as both a breakthrough and a deeply personal victory after years of hard work.
“When ‘Limpopo’ came, I was in tears that God had answered my prayers. It took me into the global market straight away. After all the years I have worked with Presh, that is the biggest record I have ever done,” he said.
Before launching his solo career, Kcee was part of the music duo KC Presh, where he built an early foundation in the industry. However, it was his solo success that propelled him into a wider spotlight.
He also pointed to the viral success of his more recent track Ojapiano, which gained massive traction across social media platforms, particularly TikTok.
“When I dropped ‘Ojapiano’ today. The next day, it was doing 120,000 videos on TikTok in one day. It happened for seven days. And that raised a conversation in the industry like ‘Why is Kcee not sitting at number one on the Apple Store?’”
Despite the lack of consistent award nominations, Kcee noted that his music has brought him significant financial success and international exposure, reinforcing his belief that impact goes beyond trophies.
He revealed that Limpopo generated substantial earnings, particularly through ringback tunes, which were highly popular at the time.
“‘Limpopo’ gave me a lot of money from ringback tunes. We were making hundreds of thousands of dollars,” he said.
Now, with years of experience behind him, the singer says his perspective has shifted. While recognition is appreciated, he no longer measures success solely by awards, choosing instead to focus on the tangible rewards of his craft and the loyalty of his audience.
His story adds to ongoing conversations about fairness, recognition, and the criteria for success in the Nigerian music industry, where many artistes continue to navigate the balance between critical acclaim and commercial impact.
