Nigerian musician Seun Kuti has sparked controversy after alleging that American streamer IShowSpeed’s recent tour across Africa was secretly funded for surveillance purposes linked to billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk.
In a viral video circulating on social media, Seun Kuti claimed the tour was not purely for entertainment or cultural promotion, but allegedly part of a hidden agenda to gather information about satellite coverage across the African continent.
According to him, he only became aware of the alleged motive recently, despite earlier interactions with individuals involved in organising the tour. He said he was initially contacted by the tour’s promoter and producer, who requested a meeting during their visit to Nigeria.
“You can’t know the deals they’re making behind the scenes. You can’t know the people they’re talking to behind the scenes. You just think they’re coming to talk to you but they all have an agenda,” he said.
Seun Kuti explained that he agreed to meet the team but later noticed a sudden change in communication once they arrived in the country.
“After IShowSpeed’s promoter and producer of his African tour called that we want to see you and I agreed. But they didn’t call me again or come to the shrine again when they reached Nigeria, and the promoter is my friend but I don’t want to mention the name,” he said.
“I called and sent messages but none of them responded. After the whole thing, he started sending me some kind of yeye message. Well e no even concern me too much because I don’t really mind, so I let it go.”
The musician then made a more controversial claim, suggesting that the entire African tour had a hidden technological objective.
“Only to find out the day before yesterday that Elon Musk was the one that sponsored the whole thing to know where his satellite don reach for Africa. That’s why they were visiting bushy areas. So, all that was a spy job for Elon Musk,” he alleged.
Seun Kuti did not provide evidence to support the claim, and neither Elon Musk nor representatives of IShowSpeed have responded publicly to the allegation at the time of this report.
IShowSpeed, a widely followed American streamer and content creator, toured approximately 20 African countries in January 2026. During the tour, he shared livestreams and videos highlighting his experiences, stating that the goal was to promote African culture and connect with fans across the continent.
The tour gained massive attention online, with millions of viewers following his travels, interactions with local fans, and cultural experiences.
However, Seun Kuti’s comments have now added a new layer of controversy to the widely publicised trip, triggering debates on social media about privacy, technology, and the narratives surrounding high-profile visits to Africa by international influencers.
As discussions continue online, there has been no official confirmation or evidence supporting the claims made by the musician, and the tour remains widely regarded as an entertainment and cultural engagement project.
