Nollywood has been thrown into fresh controversy following claims by Olaide Olabanji that he played a key role in introducing popular actress Mercy Aigbe into the movie industry, only to be repaid with what he described as betrayal and ingratitude.
Speaking during a recent interview, Olabanji recounted how his relationship with Aigbe dates back to the early 2000s.
According to him, he first met the actress in 2004 at a shop and saw potential in her. He claimed that after asking if she could act and receiving a positive response, he decided to give her an opportunity in Nollywood, a move he believes contributed to her rise in the industry.
The filmmaker noted that their relationship was initially smooth and friendly. However, he alleged that things began to change as Aigbe became more successful and widely recognized.
Olabanji claimed that the once cordial relationship gradually turned sour, with the actress becoming distant and less approachable over time.
Expressing his disappointment, Olabanji revealed that the situation has deteriorated to the point where Aigbe allegedly blocked him on social media.
He added that their encounters, whenever they cross paths, are now marked by tension rather than the mutual respect they once shared.
In his words, he suggested that Aigbe now behaves as though he no longer exists, despite what he described as his role in her early career.
He also went further to accuse the actress of repaying his kindness with what he termed “wickedness,” alleging that her attitude towards him has become increasingly hostile.
The claims have since sparked reactions among fans and followers of Nollywood, with many divided over the issue.
While some believe Olabanji’s account and sympathize with his feelings of betrayal, others have questioned the narrative, pointing out that success in the entertainment industry is often the result of multiple contributions and personal effort.
