Former Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo, has opened up about a personal turning point in his life that led him to completely stop consuming alcohol, describing it as a moment of deep reflection and spiritual awakening.

Speaking during a recent church programme, Osinbajo explained that the decision did not happen immediately after he became a Christian.

He noted that even while actively involved in ministry work and preaching, he still occasionally drank alcohol, which he personally considered harmless at the time.

According to him, he often justified this habit by referencing the biblical account of Jesus turning water into wine, a story he interpreted differently during that period of his life.

However, everything changed after a particular Sunday service he conducted. Following the service, he stopped at a restaurant to get a drink, something he said was part of his routine at the time. But what happened inside the restaurant became a defining moment for him.

Osinbajo recounted that as soon as he walked in, he noticed a sudden shift in behaviour among people present. Several individuals who were drinking alcohol quickly hid their bottles and glasses when they saw him.

The reaction, though simple, struck him deeply and made him reflect on how his position and identity influenced the behaviour of others.

He explained that the incident forced him to think beyond personal choice and consider responsibility. As a public figure and Christian leader, he began to question the message his actions might be sending, especially to those who looked up to him. The moment made him realise that influence carries weight, even in private settings.

That reflection led him to a key conclusion: just because something is permitted does not necessarily mean it is beneficial or appropriate. He described this as a shift in mindset that reshaped how he viewed discipline, leadership, and personal conduct.

From that point forward, he made a firm decision to stop drinking alcohol entirely. According to him, it was not a forced decision but a voluntary commitment rooted in conviction.

He has maintained that choice consistently over the years, including during his time in public office and international engagements.

Osinbajo further explained that the decision strengthened his personal discipline and deepened his faith. He emphasised that aligning private behaviour with public responsibility is essential, especially for individuals in leadership positions.

For him, the change was not just about giving up alcohol but about embracing a higher standard of personal accountability.

He also referenced how the experience helped shape his outlook during different phases of his public life, reinforcing the importance of consistency between belief and behaviour. The former Vice President described the moment as one that brought clarity and direction to his personal journey.

Osinbajo’s account serves as a reflection on influence, leadership, and personal transformation. His story highlights how a single everyday encounter can trigger a lifelong change, especially when viewed through the lens of responsibility and self-awareness.
