Nollywood actress and filmmaker Bimbo Ademoye has sparked conversation online after boldly confronting a group of street men who attempted to extort money from her film crew during an outdoor shoot in Lagos.

The incident, which was captured on video and shared widely on social media, showed the actress standing her ground as the men demanded what is commonly referred to as “settlement”—a practice where individuals demand payment from film crews operating in public spaces.

In the now-viral clip, Ademoye was seen addressing between three and five men who approached her team during filming at an undisclosed location. Despite the pressure, she made it clear that while she is not against giving support when necessary, she would not tolerate being forced or intimidated into making payments.

Speaking in a mix of English and Nigerian Pidgin, she said, “I am a street girl, let me tell you. Ask around, when it comes to matters of the street, I like settling boys. But you don’t come to me and tell me to give you a certain amount.”

Her response appeared to challenge both the demand and the manner in which it was made. When one of the men insisted he wasn’t begging, the actress fired back, “Yes, you came to beg. You are even being proud of it.”

The situation grew tense when one of the individuals threatened to interfere with the production by switching off her camera. Ademoye, however, did not back down, replying sharply, “Camera that nobody in your generation has.”

Although the confrontation disrupted the filming process, it did not escalate into physical violence. No weapons were seen in the footage, and the exchange remained verbal throughout. Still, the moment highlighted the challenges many Nigerian filmmakers face when shooting outside controlled environments.

The video quickly gained traction online, drawing praise from fans and observers who commended Ademoye for her composure, confidence, and refusal to be intimidated. Many described her reaction as courageous, noting that such situations often force creatives to either comply or risk having their work interrupted.

The incident has once again brought attention to the persistent issue of extortion targeting film productions across Nigeria. For years, filmmakers have had to navigate demands from local groups or individuals who claim authority over certain areas, especially in busy urban locations.

While some production teams factor these costs into their budgets to avoid conflict, others argue that the practice discourages creativity and increases the financial burden of filmmaking, particularly for independent creators.

Ademoye’s stance in the video has reignited conversations about the need for better protection and structured support for the creative industry. Many believe that stronger enforcement of regulations and improved collaboration between authorities and filmmakers could help curb such disruptions.

As the clip continues to circulate, it not only showcases a tense moment on set but also underscores a broader issue affecting Nigeria’s growing film industry—one that many hope will soon be addressed.
