A student of the University of Jos, identified as John Arum, has regained his freedom after being held by kidnappers for nearly two weeks.
He was abducted on Saturday, April 12, 2026, along the Jos–Kaduna highway, a route that has witnessed recurring security challenges in recent times. Reports indicate that he was taken by armed men during the incident and moved to an undisclosed location.
Following his abduction, the kidnappers reportedly established contact with his family and associates, demanding a ransom estimated at about ₦30 million for his release. At a point during his captivity, a disturbing video surfaced showing him being assaulted, which was believed to be used as part of the pressure tactics in the negotiation process.
The situation generated concern within the University of Jos community, with students, alumni, and members of the public calling for urgent efforts to secure his safe return. The university’s alumni network also confirmed awareness of the case and expressed concern throughout the period he was held.
After spending several days in captivity, he was eventually released. His freedom was confirmed by representatives of the UNIJOS alumni association, who stated that he had been reunited with his family. However, no official details have been provided regarding whether a ransom was paid or whether a security operation directly led to his release.
Reports suggest that he appeared weak and traumatized following his release and is currently receiving care and support to recover from the experience.
The incident has once again drawn attention to ongoing security concerns along major travel routes in the region, with renewed calls for stronger measures to protect residents and travelers.
