A bold new Nollywood project, A Land Apart, is set to challenge conventional narratives about Nigeria’s history and economic identity with a thought-provoking storyline built on an alternative reality. The upcoming drama imagines a version of Nigeria where crude oil was never discovered, forcing the nation to rely heavily on agriculture as its primary source of wealth and development.

Currently in post-production as of April 2026, the film is already generating attention for its unique premise and ambitious storytelling. With an initial target of a mid-2026 cinema release, A Land Apart is expected to offer audiences a fresh perspective on the country’s socio-economic evolution, while highlighting themes that resonate deeply with Nigeria’s past and present realities.

At the heart of the film lies a simple but powerful question: what would Nigeria look like today if oil had never been part of its economic story? By reimagining the nation’s trajectory, the movie shifts focus to agriculture, cultural heritage, and the diverse identities that shape the country. It seeks to spotlight the often-overlooked agricultural sector while examining how different regions might have developed under such circumstances.

The project is a collaboration between Take 7 Media and Sutoritera Limited, two production companies known for delivering quality storytelling within the Nollywood space. Distribution will be handled by The Nile Entertainment, further positioning the film for a wide cinema release once production is completed.

Leading the creative vision is director Pever Bem, whose previous works, including 4th Republic and Halita, have been praised for their political depth and character-driven storytelling. With A Land Apart, Bem is expected to bring the same level of intensity and attention to detail, crafting a narrative that blends fiction with socio-political commentary.

The screenplay is written by Emil Garuba and Michael Garuba, a duo recognised for their work on projects such as Lionheart and 4th Republic. Their involvement adds further credibility to the film, given their track record of delivering compelling and socially relevant stories.

One of the film’s biggest strengths lies in its impressive cast lineup, featuring some of Nollywood’s most respected actors. Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo takes on a leading role, bringing his decades of experience and screen presence to the project. He is joined by Daniel Etim Effiong, known for his versatility and strong performances in both television and film.

The supporting cast is equally notable, including industry heavyweights such as Sam Dede, Onyeka Onwenu, Frank Donga, Ivy Antiev, and Ummi Baba Ahmed. This diverse ensemble is expected to bring depth and authenticity to the film’s portrayal of different regions and cultures within the imagined Nigeria.

Beyond its storyline, A Land Apart also promises rich visual storytelling, with settings likely to reflect a country shaped by agriculture, trade, and indigenous industries rather than oil wealth. This approach could offer audiences a refreshing departure from the familiar narratives often associated with Nigeria’s oil-driven economy.

The film’s themes are particularly relevant in today’s context, as conversations around economic diversification and sustainable development continue to gain prominence in Nigeria. By presenting an alternate history, the movie not only entertains but also encourages viewers to reflect on the country’s untapped potential and the importance of sectors beyond oil.

As anticipation builds ahead of its release, A Land Apart stands out as a daring and intellectually engaging project within Nollywood. With its strong creative team, compelling premise, and star-studded cast, the film is poised to spark conversations and leave a lasting impression on audiences.

If successfully executed, it could become one of the most talked-about Nigerian films of 2026, offering both entertainment and a powerful reimagining of what might have been.
