Nigeria’s entertainment industry has long been a breeding ground for fame, fortune, and influence, but for some celebrities, the bright lights of stardom eventually give way to a deeper spiritual calling.
In recent years, a number of well-known figures have either stepped away from entertainment entirely or combined it with ministry work, redefining their purpose and public identity.
One of the most talked-about transitions is that of Tonto Dikeh. Known for her dramatic on-screen roles and equally public personal life, Dikeh’s journey has been marked by transformation.
She has openly shared her struggles with addiction and personal challenges, revealing that she once felt called to ministry as far back as her teenage years. In 2026, she marked a major milestone by completing a discipleship programme at Streams of Joy International, led by Jerry Eze.
Her renewed spiritual focus has been evident, with many observers noting her gradual withdrawal from acting and increased involvement in faith-based activities.
Unlike Dikeh, Jimmy Odukoya has managed to strike a balance between entertainment and ministry. The Nollywood actor stepped into a significant leadership role when he became the Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church in Lagos in 2023, succeeding his father.
Despite initial skepticism from some quarters, Odukoya has remained firm in his belief that both acting and preaching are part of his calling. He has continued to appear on screen while leading a congregation, proving that the two paths can coexist.
Veteran actor Zack Orji represents one of the earlier examples of this transition. After gaining widespread recognition in classic Nollywood films, he was ordained as a reverend in 2012 by Bishop Lawrence Osagie.
Since then, Orji has focused largely on ministry, preaching both within Nigeria and internationally. Although he has returned to acting in recent times, especially after recovering from health challenges, he maintains that his work in entertainment and ministry both serve as platforms to reach and inspire people.
Another iconic figure who chose faith over fame is Liz Benson. A dominant presence in Nollywood during the 1990s, Benson stepped away from acting at the peak of her career to dedicate her life to Christian ministry.
Her marriage to Bishop Great Emeya further cemented her role in evangelism. When she made a return to the screen years later, she made it clear that her roles would strictly align with her faith and personal values, signaling a complete transformation in priorities.
For Banky W, the shift has been more gradual but equally impactful. Once a leading figure in Nigeria’s music scene, he began sharing his spiritual journey publicly around 2019.
Over time, he took on teaching responsibilities at The Waterbrook Church in Lagos, where he now regularly leads Bible study sessions and delivers sermons.
While he has not fully abandoned his entertainment career, his increasing dedication to ministry highlights a conscious shift toward purpose-driven living.
These stories reflect a broader trend within Nigeria’s celebrity culture, where fame is no longer seen as the ultimate destination. Instead, many public figures are embracing spirituality as a means of fulfillment and service.
Their transitions also highlight the evolving nature of influence, showing that impact can extend beyond entertainment into areas of faith, mentorship, and community leadership.
While each journey is unique, a common thread runs through them all: a desire for meaning beyond the spotlight.
Whether through complete withdrawal from entertainment or a careful balance between both worlds, these celebrities continue to shape conversations around purpose, identity, and the role of faith in modern Nigerian society.
