A performance intended to thrill quickly turned tense in Abuja as socialite and nightlife entrepreneur Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, faced open disapproval from parts of the audience. What started as a high-energy showcase soon became a moment that highlighted how closely public entertainment and political opinions are intertwined in Nigeria.

The Imo-born ente

rtainer, known for his charisma and ability to command large crowds, took to the stage with the aim of engaging his fans. Instead of the expected applause, certain sections of the audience began chanting, “We no send your papa.”

The chant, repeated across the venue, left little doubt about the crowd’s dissatisfaction. Despite attempts to redirect the energy and connect with attendees, Cubana Chief Priest struggled to break through the wave of resistance, and the chant continued to dominate the atmosphere.

Observers suggest that the reaction may not have been limited to the performance itself.

Abuja has been a focal point for discussions surrounding governance since the 2023 general elections, and residents have expressed both hope and frustration over the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Cubana Chief Priest, who holds a leadership position as a state director in the City Boy Movement in the South East and is affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC), had previously shared regret for not supporting Tinubu earlier. He had relied on the popular phrase, “Relax, Tinubu will fix Nigeria.”

This political alignment likely played a role in the reception he received. In Nigeria, audiences often use public events to express opinions on broader social and political issues, blending cultural expressions with civic commentary.

Public figures who are seen as politically aligned are frequently evaluated not just for their entertainment but also for their perceived stances on national issues.

For Cubana Chief Priest, the Abuja experience underscores the complex interplay between fame, influence, and political perception. The night demonstrated that in an increasingly vocal society, entertainers must navigate audience expectations carefully, as public sentiment can quickly shift and extend beyond the stage.
