Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has called on the Federal Government to enact legislation to regulate religious leaders who claim to perform miracles, insisting that such assertions must be verified under controlled conditions.

In a video circulating on social media, Kuti suggested that pastors and religious figures who profess supernatural powers should be required to substantiate their claims through proper medical scrutiny. He proposed that institutions like the Lagos University Teaching Hospital play a central role in validating these alleged miracles.

“A law should be made to ensure that no one is allowed to perform miracles, and anyone caught claiming to perform a miracle should be sent to jail. The only exception would be if the miracle can be proven at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH),” Kuti stated.

The singer elaborated that the verification process should be rigorous and repeatable. He argued that religious figures must demonstrate their claimed abilities multiple times under medical supervision to prove authenticity.

“They should perform the miracle for ten people at LUTH. I do not want to hear about fake miracles, because your God can do all things. I am not talking about miracles that claim to heal someone who has been blind their entire life. In this case I’m talking about someone with no eyeballs at all and if the miracle is real, the person should gain full vision. If you cannot perform the miracle, you should be held accountable,” he explained.

Kuti also recommended strict penalties for anyone unable to substantiate their miracle claims, suggesting that long-term imprisonment could serve as a deterrent against deceitful religious practices.

“If a person is unable to perform the miracle, they should be sentenced to fifty years in prison,” he added.

The musician’s remarks come amid ongoing debates in Nigeria about accountability and ethics within religious circles, particularly concerning pastors who make extraordinary claims without providing evidence. Kuti’s proposal underscores the need for a framework that protects vulnerable followers from exploitation and ensures that miraculous claims are not used to manipulate or deceive.

By advocating for such legislation, Kuti hopes to create an environment where religious leaders are held to higher standards of transparency and credibility, aligning spiritual practices with verifiable evidence.
