The Lagos State Government has issued a formal warning to Nollywood actress Sarah Martins over her continued practice of preparing and distributing food on the streets.
The warning was delivered by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who emphasized that while the actress’s actions are rooted in charitable intentions, conducting such activities in public spaces violates state regulations and poses several risks.
According to the commissioner, cooking or selling food on public roads, walkways, or road medians is prohibited under Lagos environmental and public order laws.
These activities not only disrupt traffic but also create potential sanitation and safety concerns for residents and passersby. Wahab highlighted that Martins had previously been cautioned about this conduct last year, yet she reportedly resumed street cooking despite the prior warning.
“While we acknowledge and appreciate the spirit of charity and compassion behind what you are trying to do, carrying out such activities on public roads, walkways, or medians is not permitted under Lagos environmental and public order regulations,” Wahab stated.
He explained that the restrictions are meant to protect public safety and ensure environmental standards are upheld across the city.
The commissioner urged Martins to redirect her charitable initiatives to designated locations and approved channels where they can benefit vulnerable populations without breaching regulations.
The warning comes as part of the government’s broader effort to maintain order in public spaces and ensure compliance with city laws.
Wahab emphasized that all residents and visitors in Lagos are expected to respect existing regulations, noting that similar standards would apply in any other well-regulated city. The commissioner’s message was clear: charitable intentions must not override legal and environmental responsibilities.
