Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has presented official vehicles to Level 17 officers in the state public service, describing the gesture as part of efforts to improve efficiency and productivity across government institutions.

The governor announced the development on his X account on Tuesday, explaining that the beneficiaries are top-ranking civil servants who serve as directors within various ministries, departments, and agencies. According to him, their roles are critical to the smooth running of government operations and the delivery of services to residents.

“I presented new official vehicles to our Level 17 officers across the Lagos State Public Service. These are Directors who play a key role in how our Ministries, Departments, and Agencies deliver results. Supporting them is a practical step to help them do their work better,” he stated.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised that providing adequate tools and support for senior officials is essential to achieving effective governance. He noted that when civil servants are well-equipped, they are more likely to remain committed, take ownership of their responsibilities, and perform at a higher level.

“A motivated public service is at the heart of good governance. When people are properly equipped, they take more ownership, stay focused, and deliver with greater commitment,” the governor added.

The initiative, he explained, is part of a broader strategy to strengthen institutional capacity within the Lagos State civil service. By improving working conditions for directors and other key personnel, the government aims to raise overall performance standards and ensure better outcomes across its agencies.

“This is part of our ongoing effort to strengthen service delivery and raise the standard of performance across the system,” he said.

Tuesday’s presentation marks the third time the Sanwo-Olu administration has carried out such an exercise. In January 2023, shortly after his re-election, the governor approved the distribution of 100 official vehicles to directors across key sectors, including education, healthcare, and the mainstream civil service.

A similar exercise was also conducted in July 2024 at the State Secretariat in Alausa, with the government indicating plans to sustain the initiative through periodic distributions. The rotational approach is intended to ensure that more senior officers benefit over time.

Level 17 represents the peak of the career ladder within Nigeria’s public service structure. Officers at this level typically serve as departmental heads and play significant roles in policy implementation, administration, and decision-making within government institutions.

By targeting this group, the Lagos State Government aims to directly impact the leadership layer responsible for driving public service delivery. The provision of official vehicles is expected to enhance mobility, improve coordination, and support the execution of official duties.

The move has also been positioned as part of ongoing reforms to modernise the state’s civil service and make it more responsive to the needs of the public.
