Nollywood actor Wale Okunnu has voiced strong criticism of petroleum marketers amid Nigeria’s rising petrol prices, arguing that the burden ultimately falls on ordinary citizens.
In a video that has since gone viral on social media, Okunnu questioned why the cost of petrol in Nigeria has skyrocketed, even as prices in other countries remain relatively stable.
He pointed to the speed of the recent hike, highlighting that the fuel price jumped from N1,240 per litre on Saturday to N1,340 by Sunday, March 22.
“Please, is it the government that increased the pump price within hours or we the people?” he asked.
His question underscores the frustration many Nigerians feel as the cost of living continues to climb.
Okunnu did not shy away from addressing the common justification that international conflicts drive fuel price increases.
“We know there is war in Israel and Iran, but don’t we have our own crude oil? Why is it that our own petrol is so expensive? Other countries that have petrol, why is theirs not as expensive as ours? We are the ones punishing ourselves,” he remarked.
The actor’s comments shed light on a broader debate about accountability in Nigeria’s fuel sector.
Many citizens have expressed confusion and anger over the recurring hikes, questioning whether government policy, international market forces, or the practices of marketers are to blame.
Okunnu’s candid critique has resonated with social media users, reigniting discussions on fuel subsidies, local production, and the impact of pricing on households.
As petrol prices continue to fluctuate, voices like Okunnu’s highlight growing public concern over rising costs and the need for transparency in Nigeria’s energy market.
His remarks serve as a reminder that, in the eyes of many Nigerians, the struggle at the pump is not just about economics it is a daily challenge that affects millions.
