Nigeria’s power sector is still in chaos and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has just told it like it is: Nigerians should forget about perfect electricity in the next three and a half years.

Speaking at the 2026 APC National Convention in Abuja on Friday, March 27, Abiodun admitted what millions of frustrated citizens already know: electricity supply has been wildly inconsistent in recent weeks.

“From the common man’s point of view, we have had problems with power supply in the last couple of weeks, but we will not get it right 100 per cent in three and a half years,” he said, cutting through the usual political spin.

Yet, the governor claimed there is a silver lining. “But you know what, I think so far, so well,” he added, suggesting that progress, however slow, is at least on the horizon.

This honesty comes after weeks of nationwide power shortages that have left homes in darkness and businesses struggling to operate. Analysts say the culprit is simple: limited gas supply to thermal plants—the backbone of Nigeria’s electricity generation.

The crisis has prompted public outrage, forcing Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu to issue a rare apology to Nigerians, assuring them that the electricity supply will improve within two weeks. But for many, words are no longer enough. The outages have disrupted commerce, education, and daily life, exposing the fragility of a system long plagued by inefficiency.

Experts warn that Nigeria’s electricity nightmare cannot be solved with quick fixes. Aging infrastructure, erratic gas supply, and mismanaged assets mean that even if policies change tomorrow, stable power is still years away.

Abiodun’s candid remarks pierce through political optimism and present a harsh reality: the country is in for a prolonged energy struggle. For a nation dependent on constant electricity to power its economy, the message is clear adapt, innovate, or continue to endure unpredictable blackouts.

The power sector’s turmoil is no longer just an inconvenience; it’s a national emergency and the clock is ticking.
