The Lagos State Government has commenced an official investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite popularly known as Elena Jessica following a cosmetic surgery procedure in the state.
The incident, which has generated widespread attention across social media platforms, reportedly occurred after the woman underwent a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure at a private clinic in Lagos. Reports circulating online claimed that she later developed complications after the aesthetic surgery.
In response to the growing public concern surrounding the case, the Lagos State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) confirmed that it has begun a probe to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.
The agency, which is responsible for regulating and monitoring health facilities across Lagos State, said the investigation was necessary to establish whether the clinic involved complied with required medical standards and patient safety protocols.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, Dr. Abiola Idowu, explained that the investigation followed reports trending online about the complications that reportedly occurred after the cosmetic procedure.
She stated that although the clinic where the surgery allegedly took place is registered with the agency, its registration does not prevent authorities from investigating when serious issues concerning patient safety arise.
According to the health regulatory body, the purpose of the investigation is to examine the events that led to the reported death and determine whether there were any breaches of medical guidelines or professional standards.
Cosmetic surgeries such as the Brazilian Butt Lift have become increasingly popular in Nigeria and other parts of the world, especially among individuals seeking body enhancement procedures.
However, medical experts have repeatedly warned that such surgeries can carry serious risks if not properly performed or monitored.
Complications linked to BBL procedures may include infections, blood clots, excessive bleeding, and other health emergencies if adequate medical care is not provided.
The case has since triggered conversations about the growing trend of cosmetic surgery and the importance of ensuring strict regulation of clinics offering aesthetic medical procedures.
Authorities in Lagos have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate action will be taken if any violations of medical standards are discovered.
The Lagos State Government also reiterated its commitment to protecting residents by ensuring that healthcare facilities in the state operate according to approved safety and regulatory guidelines.
