Kannywood actor Umar Ascon has passed away after battling a prolonged illness.
The actor, widely known for his role as Alhaji Lado Mai Barkono in the long-running Hausa television series Garwashi, died on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano State.
His death was confirmed by Kannywood producer and neighbour, Abubakar Yahaya Matinko, who announced the sad development to colleagues and members of the Hausa film industry.
Ascon built a reputation in Kannywood for his calm screen presence and convincing portrayal of elderly characters, particularly in family-themed Hausa productions.
His performance as Alhaji Lado Mai Barkono in Garwashi earned him widespread recognition among fans of the popular television series.
Beyond Garwashi, the late actor also featured in several Hausa-language films that contributed to the growth of the Kannywood industry.
Among the productions he appeared in are Wata Shida and Manyan Mata, where he continued to demonstrate his versatility as a performer.
Before joining the film industry, Ascon was known as a businessman operating at the Hotoro Depot in Kano.
His transition from business into acting later earned him respect among colleagues and viewers who appreciated his dedication to storytelling within the Hausa entertainment space.
Family sources revealed that the late actor is survived by his pregnant wife and two daughters, leaving behind a young family and a community of fans mourning his loss.
Following Islamic tradition, Ascon was laid to rest shortly after his death. His funeral prayer took place at Al-Masjlisul Islami Mosque near Gade-Gade Filling Station in Kano, where family members, colleagues, and friends gathered to pay their final respects.
His passing has sparked tributes from members of the Kannywood community, many of whom remember him as a committed actor whose contributions helped shape the industry.
