Kanayo Metuh, wife of former Peoples Democratic Party spokesperson Olisa Metuh, has officially premiered her new film titled “Caged Bird,” a project focused on shedding light on the struggles faced by awaiting trial inmates in Nigeria.

The film, which was produced with support from the Legend Golden Care Foundation (LGCF) and in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission, had its exclusive screening at Delborough Hotel in Lagos. The event attracted a mix of legal practitioners, celebrities, and public figures, all gathered to witness the unveiling of a story rooted in justice and human rights advocacy.

A Story Inspired By Personal Experience

Speaking at the premiere, Kanayo Metuh explained that the inspiration behind “Caged Bird” came from her personal experiences during her husband’s prolonged legal battle. According to her, navigating that difficult period opened her eyes to the realities faced by many individuals awaiting trial in the country’s justice system.

“Three years ago, my husband was charged. The trial lasted four years and eventually led to a jail term. It was a very difficult period, but it also gave me a bird’s-eye view of the plight of awaiting trial inmates,” she said.

She noted that while the film is fictional, it draws heavily from real-life situations encountered through her foundation’s work. For her, the project represents a conscious decision to use storytelling as a tool for change.

“Even though it is a work of fiction, it is inspired by real-life cases handled by my foundation. I found myself in a position where I could either be part of the problem or part of the solution, and I chose to be part of the solution,” she added.

A Film With A Message

“Caged Bird” explores the emotional, psychological, and legal challenges faced by individuals stuck in prolonged detention without trial. It aims to highlight systemic issues within the justice sector, particularly the delays and conditions affecting inmates who have not been convicted of any crime.

Beyond entertainment, the film is positioned as an advocacy piece designed to spark conversations around reform. Kanayo emphasized that the goal is to contribute meaningfully to ongoing discussions about human rights and the need for a more efficient legal system.

Notable Cast And Appearances

The movie features a strong lineup of Nollywood actors, including Tobi Makinde, Ngozi Nwosu, Kelechi Udegbe, and Peace Christopher.

In addition, the film includes appearances from prominent figures such as Afam Osigwe, further reinforcing its connection to legal advocacy and reform.

High-Profile Premiere Event

The exclusive screening event drew a number of notable personalities, reflecting the importance of the film’s message. Among those in attendance were accountant Tayo Ayinde, socialite Aisha Achimugu, former Lagos commissioner Segun Oniru, and nightlife personality Cubana Chief Priest.

Their presence added prominence to the premiere and underscored the growing intersection between entertainment and social advocacy in Nollywood.

Background To The Story

Kanayo Metuh’s perspective on the justice system is closely tied to her husband’s legal journey. In February 2020, a Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Olisa Metuh to 39 years imprisonment after convicting him on charges related to money laundering.

The case, presided over by Justice Okon Abang, involved allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that Metuh unlawfully received N400 million from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

However, the conviction was later overturned by the Court of Appeal in December 2020, bringing a dramatic twist to the case and ultimately shaping the experiences that inspired “Caged Bird.”

Using Film As A Tool For Change

With “Caged Bird,” Kanayo Metuh joins a growing number of filmmakers using Nollywood as a platform to address societal issues. By blending storytelling with advocacy, the film seeks to not only entertain but also educate and inspire reform.

As conversations around justice, human rights, and prison reform continue, “Caged Bird” stands as a timely contribution—one that gives a voice to those often unheard within the system.
