Nollywood veteran actor and producer Jide Kosoko has recorded an impressive feat as his historical film Eleko (Oba Esugbayi) grossed approximately N18.3 million during its opening weekend across cinemas in Nigeria.

The achievement was confirmed by Jide Kosoko on his Instagram page on Tuesday, where he expressed heartfelt gratitude to moviegoers for their overwhelming support.

In his post, Jide wrote, “THANK YOU NIGERIA!! A big thank you to everyone that showed us support in the best ways that you could, none of it went unnoticed. We are super grateful. ELEKO (Ona Esugbayi) is still showing Nationwide!!”

Eleko premiered in Nigerian cinemas on March 20, 2026. The film explores the life of Oba Esugbayi Eleko, a Lagos monarch who courageously resisted British colonial authority in the early 20th century. By depicting the challenges and triumphs of Oba Esugbayi, the movie offers both entertainment and a vivid historical lesson for Nigerian audiences.

Produced under the Jide Kosoko Film Presentation banner, Eleko was directed by Adebayo Tijani, Babatunde Kosoko, and Tunde Olaoye, with distribution handled by Genesis Pictures.

The film features an ensemble cast of celebrated Nollywood stars, including Femi Branch in the lead role as Oba Esugbayi, alongside Jide Kosoko, Sola Kosoko, Femi Adebayo, Saidi Balogun, Dele Odule, Yinka Quadri, Yemi Solade, Adebayo Salami, Jumoke Odetola, and Broda Shaggi.

The film’s opening weekend performance highlights the strong appetite among Nigerian audiences for homegrown historical narratives, particularly those that showcase the resilience and cultural heritage of the country.

Analysts note that films rooted in Nigerian history and folklore have increasingly attracted attention at the box office, proving that local stories continue to resonate with moviegoers.

With Eleko still screening nationwide, expectations are high that the film will continue to perform well, potentially surpassing its initial earnings. Jide Kosoko’s ability to bring together a mix of veteran actors and emerging talents has been praised as a key factor contributing to the movie’s success.

The release of Eleko also underscores the growing professionalism and production quality in Nollywood.

From compelling storytelling and meticulous attention to historical detail to stellar performances and polished cinematography, the film exemplifies the strides Nigerian cinema has made in recent years.

As audiences continue to flock to cinemas, Jide Kosoko and his team are poised to further solidify their reputation in Nollywood, demonstrating that Nigerian historical films can achieve both critical acclaim and commercial success.
