Nigerian-born UFC star Israel Adesanya has suffered a devastating fourth consecutive defeat after being knocked out by Joe Pyfer in the second round of their middleweight clash in Washington on Saturday night, March 28.

The former two-time UFC middleweight champion went into the bout under intense pressure, already enduring the worst run of his professional MMA career.

Despite showing early promise, Adesanya was unable to halt his downward spiral as Pyfer delivered a dominant and clinical performance to secure victory in the UFC Seattle main event.

Adesanya started the fight brightly, using his trademark striking ability to control the opening round. The 35-year-old looked sharp and composed, winning round one and appearing determined to bounce back from his recent setbacks.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second round as both fighters engaged in a fierce exchange.

Sensing an opportunity, Pyfer stepped up the intensity, landing a series of powerful strikes that forced Adesanya onto the back foot.

The bout quickly turned into a chaotic brawl, with Pyfer gaining the upper hand through his aggression and physicality.

The 29-year-old contender then secured a crucial takedown, putting Adesanya in a vulnerable position on the canvas.

From there, Pyfer dominated the ground exchange, unleashing multiple unanswered strikes. Adesanya struggled to defend himself effectively, leaving the referee, Herb Dean, with no choice but to step in and stop the contest with just 42 seconds remaining in the second round.

The defeat marks a significant decline for Adesanya, who was once regarded as one of the most dominant fighters in the UFC.

His last victory came in April 2023, when he knocked out Alex Pereira at UFC 287 to reclaim the middleweight title. That triumph, however, now appears to have been the peak before a troubling slump.

Following that win, Adesanya lost his title to Sean Strickland via unanimous decision at UFC 293. He then suffered a submission defeat against Dricus du Plessis, who successfully defended the belt he had taken from Strickland.

His struggles continued into 2025, when Nassourdine Imavov knocked him out in the first round during a UFC event in Saudi Arabia, raising serious concerns about the future of his career.

This latest loss to Pyfer has now extended Adesanya’s losing streak to four fights, casting further doubt over his ability to return to elite form. Once celebrated for his precision striking, confidence, and dominance in the octagon, Adesanya now faces a critical crossroads.

Questions are already being raised about whether the former champion can reinvent himself and mount a comeback, or if his time at the top level of the sport is coming to an end.

For a fighter who once ruled the middleweight division with authority, this current run represents a dramatic and concerning fall from grace.
