Nigerian rapper and singer Superboy Cheque has opened up about a difficult period in his life when his battle with acne threatened to derail his music career.

Speaking in a candid interview with Yanga FM Lagos, the artist revealed how the struggle with his skin not only affected his self-esteem but also nearly forced him to quit pursuing music altogether.

Cheque explained that his perfectionist tendencies and desire to look presentable while performing and attending interviews made the situation even more stressful. In an attempt to remedy his acne, he purchased a makeup product that instead of helping, almost disfigured his face.

“I struggled with acne years back. It was terrible. My desperation to cure it led me to buy a makeup that almost disfigured my face. It was embarrassing. I almost quit music. I couldn’t even approach women then,” he said.

The singer recalled that after the success of his breakthrough song, Zoom, and securing a record deal, he realized he would be expected to appear in interviews and in front of cameras regularly. The pressure to maintain a flawless appearance became overwhelming.

“I am a perfectionist. So, I went to get a makeup from a store to clear it, but instead it almost disfigured my face. I woke up one morning and realized that my whole face had been damaged,” Cheque recounted.

Despite this setback, the experience became a source of inspiration for his music. Cheque revealed that it influenced his hit song History, a collaboration with Fireboy DML.

Beyond music, the ordeal also affected his social interactions and comfort in front of cameras, leaving him shy and withdrawn at times.

Speaking on the broader impact, Cheque said the struggle with acne shaped his mindset, forcing him to learn resilience and self-acceptance.

He acknowledged that many young people, especially aspiring musicians, face pressures related to appearance and public perception, and he hopes his story can encourage them not to let temporary setbacks define their ambitions.
