Nigerian entrepreneur Grace Makun has sparked conversations on social media after sharing her thoughts about the changing contents of children’s birthday party packs.

Grace, who is married to popular Nigerian fashion designer Yomi Casual, expressed surprise at what many parents now include in party packs given to children during birthday celebrations.

Traditionally, party packs were one of the highlights of children’s parties. They typically contained small toys, sweets, and sometimes educational items that made them exciting for kids to open after the celebration. For many children, the anticipation of receiving a colourful bag filled with fun items was part of the joy of attending birthday parties.

However, according to Grace Makun, that trend appears to be changing. She observed that many parents now include basic food items in the packs rather than toys or playful treats.

Sharing her observation in a social media post, she wrote:

“Party packs are starting to look like a charity project. What happened to toys, educational resources, and simple treats? Now it’s indomie, bag of rice, sugar, Milo, Maggi, cereal.”

Her comment quickly caught the attention of many online users, with several people relating to her observation about the shift in party pack culture.

Grace Makun continued her post with a humorous tone, suggesting she might have missed the memo about the new trend.

“What is going on? Someone should update me… I’ve been missing a lot on this Obasanjo internet lately. Is this the new trend? Did someone announce it and I just didn’t hear?” she added.

The remark has since triggered mixed reactions online. While some social media users agreed with her and said party packs should remain fun and child-friendly, others defended the new approach, arguing that including food items may actually be more practical for families.

Some commenters also pointed out that the rising cost of living may be influencing how parents prepare party packs, leading them to include items that could be useful at home.

Despite the debate, Grace Makun’s observation has reignited discussions about children’s birthday party traditions and how they continue to evolve with changing times.
