Veteran Nigerian gospel singer and songwriter Toun Soetan, widely known as Evangelist Shouet, has passed away at the age of 73.
The respected gospel minister was celebrated for her enduring contributions to Christian music in Nigeria, particularly as the original composer of the beloved chorus Darling Jesus, a song that has been sung in churches across the country for decades.
News of her passing has drawn tributes from members of the gospel music community and admirers who remember her not only as a singer but also as a spiritual minister whose songs inspired worshippers.
Reacting to the development, Alhaji Kunle Bakare, former Secretary of the Oyo State chapter of the Entertainment Writers Association of Nigeria, described the late singer as a gifted servant of God whose music carried deep spiritual meaning.
“The late gospel music player will also be remembered for her music college, where she trained so many gospel music players, most of whom are reigning today,” Bakare said.
Beyond her musical recordings, Soetan also made a lasting impact by mentoring and training aspiring gospel musicians. Through her music school, she helped nurture several singers and instrumentalists who have gone on to establish themselves in the gospel music ministry.
Another gospel musician, Peters Olaniyi Olusegun, also confirmed the sad news in a Facebook post, expressing grief over the loss of the respected minister.
“We just lost another legend this morning, Mummy Toun Soetan. May the Lord be with the family and Daddy Titus Soetan,” he wrote.
The late evangelist’s music ministry extended beyond her most famous song. She also released other worship songs that became popular in Christian gatherings, including Ke Pe Jesu and Cast Your Burdens.
These songs, like Darling Jesus, were widely used during church services, prayer meetings, and gospel events, helping to shape the worship culture in many Nigerian congregations.
Soetan was known for her passionate dedication to gospel music ministry, using her voice and songwriting to encourage faith and spiritual reflection among listeners. Her music resonated strongly with Christian audiences who embraced her songs as tools for worship and praise.
Over the years, Darling Jesus in particular became one of the most recognisable Christian choruses in Nigeria. Its simple lyrics and heartfelt melody allowed congregations to easily sing along, making it a staple in many church services.
Her influence extended beyond recording and performing music. Through her teaching and mentoring efforts, she contributed to the development of future generations of gospel musicians, leaving a legacy that continues to influence the Christian music community.
Friends, colleagues, and church members have continued to express condolences to her family while celebrating her life and ministry.
Although details surrounding her passing were not immediately disclosed, tributes from admirers highlight the profound spiritual and musical impact she had during her lifetime.
For many Nigerians who grew up singing her songs in church, Evangelist Shouet will be remembered as a devoted gospel minister whose music helped strengthen faith and bring worshippers together in praise.
