Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital has spoken out in defence of two of its senior doctors following their suspension over the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the hospital reaffirmed its trust in the competence and character of its affected staff members after the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) announced interim suspension orders.

Those suspended include Euracare’s Medical Director, Tunde Majekodunmi, and anaesthesiologist Titus Ogundare. Also affected is Atinuke Uwajeg, Chief Medical Officer of Atlantis Pediatric Hospital.

Background To The Case

Nkanu died on January 7, 2026, following complications that arose during preparatory medical procedures. In the aftermath, Adichie issued a legal notice to both Euracare and Atlantis Hospital, alleging medical negligence and professional misconduct in the handling of her son’s care.

The MDCN’s Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel subsequently examined the circumstances surrounding the incident. After reviewing submissions and testimonies, the panel concluded that a prima facie case of medical negligence existed against both institutions.

As a result, the three doctors were barred from practising medicine in Nigeria pending a full hearing before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

Hospital Raises Concerns

While acknowledging the seriousness of the matter, Euracare expressed reservations about aspects of the investigative process.

“Our attention has been drawn to widespread media reports concerning the interim suspension orders and other findings issued by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel against thirteen doctors, two of whom are our clinical staff members, in connection with the ongoing proceedings relating to the death of Master Nkanu Nnamdi Esege,” the hospital stated.

The facility emphasised its continued support for the suspended doctors, describing them as seasoned practitioners with longstanding records of service.

“We wish to place on record our confidence in the professionalism and integrity of our clinical team. Dr Tosin Majekodunmi and Dr Titus Ogundare are experienced professionals whose records of service to patients in Nigeria span many years,” the statement read.

According to Euracare, “both doctors have, in their respective careers, contributed meaningfully to the delivery of quality healthcare to Nigerian patients at a standard comparable to what is obtainable in the world’s leading medical facilities.”

Beyond defending its staff, the hospital questioned whether proper procedures were followed during the review.

“We are compelled to draw attention to a number of serious concerns that have arisen in the course of these proceedings. It is our position that certain established processes and protocols have not been followed in the manner required,” it added.

Euracare indicated that it would address its concerns through “appropriate legal and regulatory channels,” stressing the need for a disciplinary process carried out with “rigour, impartiality, and respect for the rules that govern it.”

Wider Findings

The MDCN panel’s review covered 21 doctors in total. While three practitioners were suspended, the panel identified prima facie cases of professional misconduct against ten others. Eight doctors were cleared after the evaluation of written complaints, counter-affidavits, and sworn oral testimonies.

All suspended doctors remain prohibited from practising medicine until the disciplinary tribunal reaches a final determination.

Euracare concluded its statement by extending sympathy to the grieving family.

“We continue to empathise with the family of Master Nkanu Nnamdi Esege. The loss of a child is a grief without measure,” the hospital said.

As the matter moves to the next phase of disciplinary proceedings, both the medical community and the public continue to watch closely for the tribunal’s final verdict.
