Veteran Nollywood actress Eucharia Anunobi has shared details of the hardships she faced while growing up, revealing that her father strongly opposed her education and later rejected her decision to pursue a career in acting.
Speaking during an emotional conversation on a podcast, the actress recounted how her father believed educating a girl child was unnecessary because women would eventually marry and rely on their husbands.
According to Anunobi, her father was financially comfortable but still refused to support her education due to his beliefs. She explained that the situation created tension between them, especially when she insisted on pursuing her personal ambitions.
The veteran actress said the disagreement eventually led her father to withdraw financial support for her schooling and distance himself from her after she refused to follow the career path he had chosen for her.
Determined to continue her studies, Anunobi turned to modelling as a source of income, using the earnings to fund her education and sustain herself.
The actress also recalled a particularly difficult moment during her youth when her father locked her inside her room for six months after she refused to fill out employment forms he wanted her to submit for an office job.
She explained that her father slid the forms under the door and insisted she complete them, hoping to force her into the career he preferred. However, she remained firm in her decision and refused to sign the documents despite the pressure.
According to Anunobi, the disagreement eventually led to her father unofficially disowning her and rejecting her decision to become an actress.
Because of the tension at home, she said she sometimes had to secretly leave the house in order to attend auditions. On some occasions, she even climbed over the fence to avoid being stopped.
Her determination eventually paid off when she began to achieve recognition in the film industry. The turning point in her relationship with her father came when she won her first award in London for her role in the film Glamour Girls.
Anunobi revealed that when she returned home with the award and presented it to her father, the moment softened his stance toward her career.
According to the actress, the achievement helped rebuild their relationship, and her father eventually gave his blessing.
Her story highlights the challenges many women face when pursuing careers that conflict with traditional expectations or family pressure.
In recent years, several Nigerian entertainers have also shared personal experiences about difficult family relationships and childhood struggles.
Reality TV star Erica Nlewedim previously responded to criticism from a fan who questioned her decision to attend a movie premiere with her father, who had been largely absent during her upbringing.
Erica defended her choice, explaining that she had already celebrated her mother throughout the holiday period and did not see the need to hold on to resentment.
She questioned whether critics expected her to remain bitter toward him for the rest of her life.
Similarly, veteran actress Jumoke George once shared how family tensions affected her childhood. She revealed that after her parents separated, her decision to remain with her father instead of her mother led to her mother distancing herself from her.
Her father’s remarriage further complicated their relationship, as she struggled to connect with her father due to the influence of his new wife.
Actor Charles Inojie also spoke publicly about the difficulties he experienced as a child. He revealed that his mother left when he was just eight months old after separating from his father.
According to him, his father later remarried, and his stepmother treated him harshly while persuading his father not to provide for him.
Nollywood actress Bimbo Ademoye has also shared her own story of abandonment. She revealed that her mother left when she was just two years old, although she has since tried to reconnect with her and support her financially.
Internet personality James Brown has also spoken about being abandoned shortly after birth. He previously credited his grandmother for raising him and providing the love and care he needed growing up.
Despite attempts by his mother to reconnect later in life, he revealed that he decided to maintain distance from her.
Stories like these highlight the personal struggles many public figures have faced before achieving success, often overcoming rejection, financial hardship, and family conflicts along the way.
For Anunobi, her journey from family opposition to becoming one of Nollywood’s respected actresses remains a testament to perseverance and determination.
