Veteran Nollywood actress Eucharia Anunobi has opened up about the intense criticism she faced decades ago after portraying a controversial character in the movie Glamour Girls 2.

Speaking during a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, the actress reflected on how the public reaction to her role left a lasting impression on her career at the time.

Anunobi explained that the backlash began after she played the character Anita in the film, a role that depicted a bold and promiscuous escort. According to her, many viewers struggled to separate the fictional character from her real-life personality, leading to widespread misjudgment and criticism.

She said some members of the public started labelling her with negative names, assuming that her on-screen role reflected who she was in reality.

“I faced a lot of backlash for my role in Glamour Girls 2. You know, at that time the Nigerian populace pretended that they don’t watch such movies. So, a lot of people were labelling me. They called me Sharon Stone, Mammy Water, Husband Snatcher,” she recalled.

The actress noted that the character she portrayed was a student who became involved with a wealthy married man, which further fueled the public perception that she was a seductress in real life.

“The character I played was a student who snatched a wealthy man from his wife. So, a lot of people were seeing me as a seductress. Well, I am very alluring,” she said.

Despite the criticism she received at the time, Anunobi acknowledged that she understood why some viewers reacted the way they did, especially given the sensitive themes explored in the film.

“I can’t deny that because if I deny myself that means I am denying God. A lot of people were like that leave your man with Eucharia, she’s going to take him away. It was crazy to the point that if women see me when they are with their men, they hold them tightly,” she said.

Her comments highlight how strongly audiences once reacted to film characters, particularly during the earlier years of Nollywood when viewers often blurred the line between actors and the roles they portrayed on screen.

Anunobi stressed that her performance in the film was simply part of her work as an actress, explaining that she was merely bringing a scripted character to life rather than reflecting her personal values or lifestyle.

She added that the role required dedication and professionalism, like any other acting job.

The actress also shared an interesting behind-the-scenes detail about the film, revealing that she received additional payment for performing a particularly bold scene.

According to her, she was compensated extra for the bathtub scene she filmed with veteran actor Zack Orji in the movie.

Glamour Girls, which was released in the early 1990s, remains one of Nollywood’s most talked-about films because of its daring storyline and portrayal of the glamorous but controversial lives of women involved in high society and escort services.

The movie contributed significantly to shaping the early era of Nigeria’s home video industry and introduced audiences to several memorable characters, including Anunobi’s Anita.

Looking back now, the actress appears to view the experience as part of her journey in the film industry, even though the backlash at the time was intense.

Her reflection also sheds light on the challenges actors sometimes face when audiences struggle to separate fiction from reality, especially when a character is portrayed convincingly.

Over the years, Anunobi has continued to build a long and respected career in Nollywood, appearing in numerous films and television productions while also serving as a minister and motivational speaker.
