Controversial Nigerian broadcaster Daddy Freeze has stirred fresh debate after questioning the effectiveness of religion in addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.

The media personality made the remarks during a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, where he expressed concern about what he described as a disconnect between religious devotion and the country’s overall development.

According to him, despite Nigeria being widely regarded as a deeply religious nation, the expected positive outcomes—such as improved living standards, stronger infrastructure, and better governance—are not evident. He suggested that the level of religiosity in the country does not reflect in the nation’s progress.

During the discussion, Daddy Freeze compared Nigeria with countries that are less religious in practice, such as Japan. He argued that these nations appear to demonstrate stronger development and higher quality of life, despite placing less emphasis on religious activities.

“How is religion working for us?” he asked during the conversation, raising concerns about the perceived benefits of religious devotion in the country.

Expanding on his point, he criticised what he described as a lack of tangible results linked to religious practices. He questioned the idea that spirituality alone should guarantee prosperity and well-being, suggesting that real-world outcomes tell a different story.

“My problem with religion is – it has no results. Where is the prosperity? Where is the love? You say God loves us because we are religious so how come the Japanese are the ones enjoying their own heaven on earth? They are developed,” he stated.

He further argued that despite Nigeria’s strong religious culture, the country continues to face significant economic and social challenges. According to him, there is a mismatch between the expectations people have from religion and the reality they experience in their daily lives.

“We don’t have anything but we have this ‘God that favours us.’ However, when we truly list the things what we say favour is – prosperity, health… Did you know Nigeria has the shortest life expectancy in the world according to the 2026 statistics -54 years?” he added.

Daddy Freeze also pointed to financial practices in the country, noting that many Nigerians contribute heavily to religious institutions through tithes and offerings. He contrasted this with the level of taxation and public investment, suggesting that the imbalance raises important questions about priorities and national development.

“We pay more tithes than taxes in this country yet our prayers and sacrifices don’t seem to reflect on the condition of our nation,” he said.

His comments have since generated widespread reactions across social media platforms, with Nigerians expressing a range of opinions on the role of religion in the country. While some agreed with his perspective and called for more focus on practical development, others disagreed, defending the importance of faith in personal and national life.

The debate highlights an ongoing conversation in Nigeria about the relationship between religion and development, especially in a country where religious activities play a significant role in everyday life.

As discussions continue, Daddy Freeze’s remarks have once again placed him at the centre of public discourse, reinforcing his reputation for challenging conventional views on religion and encouraging critical conversations about societal progress.
