Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr has sparked discussion in the Afrobeats community after revealing her personal picks for the genre’s top three artistes.
In a recent interview on Hot 97, the “Rush” hitmaker named Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, and Rema as her “Afrobeats Big 3.” Her selection notably omits Davido and Burna Boy, who are often considered staples in similar rankings.
Explaining her choice, Starr told the radio host, “My Afrobeats Big 3 would be Tiwa Savage, Wizkid and Rema. My solid Big 3.” Her comments have ignited conversations online, with fans debating the merits of her list and comparing it to traditional views of the genre’s leading performers.
Beyond discussing her top artistes, Ayra Starr also opened up about her recent move from Nigeria to New York City and how the experience has influenced her music and lifestyle. She revealed that her time in the city, coupled with the support of close friends, played a significant role in her decision.
“I spent the last two summers in New York and last summer I lived in Hell’s Kitchen for about three months with my friends. We were watching American shows and movies. It was fun,” she shared.
The singer noted that relocating to the United States had been a long-standing aspiration. She deliberately chose New York over Los Angeles due to its closer proximity to Nigeria and a more manageable time difference. “Also, growing up, I had always wanted to come to America. So which city would I want to go? LA is too far, the time difference with Nigeria is nine hours. So, I chose New York,” she said during her discussion with media personality Angela Yee.
Starr’s personal ranking and international move have highlighted her unique perspective on Afrobeats and her desire to connect globally while maintaining her Nigerian roots. Fans have lauded her for spotlighting Tiwa Savage, a fellow female artist, while also giving a nod to rising star Rema, emphasizing the new generation of Afrobeats talent.
The interview has since gone viral, with social media users reacting to her choices and questioning the absence of some of the genre’s biggest names. Some fans agree with Starr’s selections, praising her focus on artistry and influence rather than commercial success, while others argue that leaving out Davido and Burna Boy overlooks their significant impact on the genre.
As Ayra Starr continues to establish herself as a leading voice in Afrobeats, her opinions on the genre’s hierarchy provide insight into how emerging Nigerian artists view the evolving music landscape and the balance between legacy and new talent.
Her candid discussion also offers a glimpse into the life of a young Nigerian artist navigating international exposure while staying true to her cultural roots, a balancing act many rising stars in Afrobeats face today.
