Nollywood actor Olumide Oworu has opened up about his decision to venture into partisan politics, explaining that his move was driven by concern over Nigeria’s direction and a desire to be part of the country’s decision-making process.

In a recent interview with Naija FM Lagos, the 31-year-old actor said he felt compelled to step into the political arena because of the state of the nation.

According to him, the policies made by those in power affect everyone, including him, and he believes young people must actively participate in shaping the country’s future.

Oworu noted that Nigeria has experienced a steady decline over the years, adding that the situation today is far from what it used to be when he was younger.

He expressed worry about raising a family in the current climate, stressing that he wants to contribute to building a better environment for the next generation.

“I decided to join politics because of how the country is going. I know how Nigeria was when I was younger, but now, things keep getting worse. And I want to start a family and raise my kids here,” he said.

The actor emphasized that becoming a policymaker would allow him to directly influence decisions that shape citizens’ lives. He argued that government policies do not exist in isolation, as they ultimately impact ordinary Nigerians.

“I have to make sure that I try my best to be among the policymakers because whatever policy that is being enacted, it would ultimately affect me like every other common person,” he added.

Oworu also pointed to the aging political class as another reason for his involvement. He suggested that many of the current leaders are advancing in age, yet the consequences of their decisions will be borne by younger generations.

“And also, most of the present crops of politicians are aging out and whatever policy they are making today, it is me and my friends who will be at the receiving end tomorrow,” he explained.

In the 2023 general elections, Oworu contested for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Surulere 1 constituency under the Labour Party. However, he lost to fellow actor and lawmaker Desmond Elliott.

Despite the setback, Oworu has remained vocal about youth participation in governance. His comments reflect a growing trend of entertainers transitioning into politics, driven by a desire to influence change beyond the screen.
